The British government developed a new colonial policy in the 1760s due to the costs of administering its vast empire following the French and Indian War. Colonists opposed this new policy because it increased taxes and regulations via acts like the Sugar Act and Stamp Act in violation of their tradition of self-governance. As colonial reaction escalated through boycotts and protests, tensions increased and eventually led to open rebellion and the Revolutionary War. Meanwhile, colonists divided into Patriots who chose independence through revolution, Loyalists who remained loyal to Britain, and moderates caught between the two sides.

Over the last decade, research in the area of e-learning employed efforts in solutions for sharing and reuse of educational resources. However, these solutions were not built for communication with each other. That is, in general, the development of these solutions has not provided mechanisms to facilitate the exchange of resources among them. Thus, this effort led to a fragmented landscape of concurrent metadata schemas or interface mechanisms. To address this problem, this work aims to design an ontology based semantic model for sharing educational resources from different sources. This model serves as a hub of enriched metadata for educational resources, aiming to classify, organize and align these resources. At the current step of this research, we developed the ontology for the integration model, and initial evaluations were performed, showing its efficiency in the formal description of educational resources.

Improving a Recommender System Through Integration of User Profiles: a Semant...

The users are present in multiple social networks/virtual communities and each one can be considered as a source of information about this user. In face to this question it is important a mechanism to integrate the user profiles. Through the integration of user profiles it is possible identifier more accurately their interests analyzing other data sources that they are present, possible reducing the cold-start problem. In this context, we present a semantic approach to help integrate data from multiple sources, for the construction and maintenance of user profiles that will be used to improve the quality of a recommender system. To integrate data from multiple sources, we defined a heuristic that quantifies the importance of each data source for a given user. To validate our approach, we perform a case study, where the solution was coupled into a recommender system of papers focused in Software Engineering domain. The user profiles were built extracting their information from the Brazilian Curriculum Vitae database named CV-Lattes, an academic platform, and Linkedin, a business network. We compared the quality of the recommendation based on the profiles integrated and non-integrated. The results show the superior quality of the recommendation based on integrated profile.

An Open and Inspectable Learner Modeling with a Negotiation Mechanism to Solv...

Some researchers have developed relevant and diverse proposals for improving the content quality of the learner model in Intelligent Tutoring Systems, mainly reducing its uncertainty. Following this aim, this paper proposes an open learner modeling approach using Bayesian networks, focusing on negotiation mechanism to solve detected cognitive conflicts that can emerge when the learner inspects information of his model inferred by the system. Therefore, we addressed some issues concerning the provision of inspectable model and negotiated updating of this model. Its contribution lies in the fact that the learners attempt to change the learner model is met with a challenge, leading to a decision if the learner claims to know more (or less) than the model represents.

Social Query: A Query Routing System for Twitter

Social Query is a new and efficient way to get answers on the social networks. However, the popular method of sharing public questions could be optimized by directing the question to an expert, a process called query routing. In this work, we propose a Social Query System for query routing on Twitter, currently, one of the most popular social networks. The Social Query Systems analyzes the information about the questioner’s followers and recommends the most suitable users to answer the questions. The use of the system changes the usual process, working apart of Twitter and allowing questioner and responder exceed the limit of 140 characters. Through a qualitative evaluation, we showed promising results and ideas for improving the system and the recommendation algorithm.

A Query Routing Model to Rank Expertcandidates on Twitter

The document proposes a query routing model to rank expert candidates on Twitter to answer questions. It evaluates knowledge, trust, and activity criteria to determine the best person to direct a question to. An evaluation of the model on 160 questions showed it achieved over 90% accuracy in predicting the ideal expert ranking, outperforming using individual criteria. This demonstrates the model is effective at query routing on Twitter to connect questions with suitable answers.

Recommending Scientific Papers: Investigating the User Curriculum

In this paper, we propose a Personalized Paper Recommender System, a new user-paper based approach that takes into consideration the user academic curriculum vitae. To build the user profiles, we use a Brazilian academic platform called CV-Lattes. Furthermore, we examine some issues related to user profiling, such as (i) we define and compare different strategies to build and represent the user profiles, using terms and using concepts; (ii) we verify how much past information of a user is required to provide good recommendations; (iii) we compare our approaches with the state-of-art in paper recommendation using the CV-Lattes. To validate our strategies, we conduct a user study experiment involving 30 users in the Computer Science domain. Our results show that (i) our approaches outperform the state-of-art in CV-Lattes; (ii) concepts profiles are comparable with the terms profiles; (iii) analyzing the content of the past four years for terms profiles and five years for concepts profiles achieved the best results; and (iv) terms profiles provide better results but they are slower than concepts profiles, thus, if the system needs real time recommendations, concepts profiles are better.

Enhancing the Status Message Question Asking Process on Facebook

People have been using Social Networks to search for help by broadcasting messages that reflect their information needs. However, several factors, usually not considered by the user, influence the outcome of receiving or not an answer. In this work, we aim to increase the users’ chances of finding someone who could help them. For this purpose, we propose a mobile app called Social Query, which guides the users through some steps before they share the problem with their friends. As far as we know, this is the first work to merge these three aspects of the social search: Question Rephrasing, Expert Search Filtering and Expertise Finding. To evaluate our proposal, we ran a questionnaire in which users considered Useful most functions of the app.

Mentoring Underrepresented Students

A key to student success is mentoring. This is especially true for underrepresented minority (URM) students who may not have the social structure that provides role models and intellectual and emotional supports that students need to succeed. Mentoring can provide this infrastructure and fill in gaps in knowledge and access to available resources which many URM students need. Peer mentoring is critical for student success, but it has to be supported with faculty mentoring for optimal effectiveness. Many non-minority faculty are wary about taking on the role of mentor for URM students. This is usually not because they do not want to but rather it is usually because they are concerned that they do not know how. The discussion will focus on how faculty mentors can overcome the barriers and gain awareness, insight and strategies on mentoring URM students to increase the chances for their future success professionally and personally.

This does not mean it is right for people to be discriminated against. There are different forms of discrimination, like linguistic discrimination. Linguistic discrimination is discrimination based on accent. It is the unjust treatment of people based on their native language or other aspects of their linguist abilities (Craft et al., 2020). It is the unfair treatment of a person based on the characteristics of their speech, such as accent, vocabulary size, and syntax. Linguistic discrimination can explain the huge differences in employment gaps among different races in the United States. Minority races face discrimination when seeking employment opportunities due to their linguistic abilities. The unemployment rate of African Americans is 11.4% in 2020 due to discrimination based on their accent (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021). Awareness-raising is an intervention that can help reduce discrimination against others based on their accent. Awareness Raising Raising awareness is one of the oldest forms of trying to change the behavior of society. It involves educating the people while trying to initiate change through behavioral and attitude change. In most cases, people believe in something based on their knowledge over the years, including being passed on from parents or guardians. Most of the time, the knowledge may be wrong but has an adverse impact on the attitude and behavior of the person. Their knowledge of something having passed down generations may not reflect the true picture of the subject or issue. Therefore, raising awareness tries to change the person's attitude, beliefs, and behavior by informing them and educating them on the topic or issue. The new knowledge gained by the person is supposed to influence their attitude and behavior. This will lead to having new ideologies which are true. Raising awareness can be a successful initiative when well planned and implemented. Raising awareness can be used as an advocacy tool to help in convincing policy makers of the urgency of a certain issue. Raising awareness can be used to help educate people about topics or issues and encourage them to participate in bringing change (Voirol et al., 2021). There are two thoughts behind raising awareness. The two thoughts can effectively bring change to the society facing an issue. The current issue of discrimination can be fought by raising awareness. Very few people can define discrimination based on the accent of the person. This is because explaining this form of discrimination is a complex process. As we increasingly find ourselves working with Gen Y, it’s easy to make lots of assumptions about how they like to learn. What we wanted to do with this project is create conversations with a representative sample from this group to help us gain more insight into their relationship with learning and their expectations of it in an organisational context. Soon, they will make up over half the working population so they are very much a part of the landscape for the future of learning. It’s important we listen to them and plan accordingly. This report is the result of those conversations.

Write a response to this answer posted below. 1 full page Question : Review the Global Mindset model in our materials this week. Look at each of the 9 dimensions and 35 underlying capabilities. Reflect on your level of readiness for global leadership using these as a point of reference. Answer: According to Javidan & Walker (2012), there are three core capitals that make up the global mindset, intellectual capital, psychological capital, and social capital. Underneath these capitals, there are nine dimensions, three for each capital, that are broken down further into 36 capabilities. I attempted to find the Global Mindset Inventory (GMI) to truly assess my skillset, but I could not find it. Bird & Stevens (2018) explain the GMI to be a self-evaluation where respondents answer based on a 5-point scale. Starting with the first capital, intellectual capital is broken down into global business savvy, cognitive complexity, and a cosmopolitan outlook. From an intellectual capital perspective, I am severely lacking in the global business savvy department. I am not aware of the included capabilities like marketing strategies, how to manage risk, or understand supplier options for organizations in other countries (Javidan & Walker, 2012). I simply do not have enough knowledge in the business processes in other countries. I am little better with a cosmopolitan outlook dimension because I have geography and cultural knowledge. However, I could improve on my political and historical knowledge, though that knowledge would be easy to increase. I am very strong in the cognitive complexity dimension because I practice problem solving, understand abstract ideas, and explain complex issues daily in my current job. I understand that there are many complexities to cultures that may take time and experience to understand, if ever. The second capital, psychological capital, is broken down into passion for diversity, quest for adventure, and self-assurance (Javidan & Walker, 2012). I am very strong in all dimensions of this capital. I am genuinely interested in learning about other people from different parts of the world, willing to deal unpredictable situations, energetic, and self-confident. I consider this the motivational aspect of the global mindset ideology because it has more to do with the person’s willingness to discover and experience the unknown (Bird & Stevens, 2018). The third capital, social capital, is broken down into intercultural empathy, interpersonal impact, and diplomacy (Javidan & Walker, 2012). Gooderham and Stensaker (2015) explain that social capital facilitates knowledge sharing because it strengthens relationships and stimulates discussions.
