2. MYTHs campaign is launching at
Mizzou for National Eating Disorders
Awareness Week
• The Missouri Eating Disorders Council
(MOEDC) is launching its MYTHS campaign on
campus to encourage everyone who knows
someone with an eating disorder to break the
silence and take action by connecting to the
cause at MOEDC.org.
4. The Facts Are Shocking…
• Thirty million Americans are suffering from
an eating disorder and more than half a
million reside in Missouri. It is time to get
real and break the silence about eating
disorders.
• This campaign is all about shattering the
misconceptions and myths surrounding
eating disorders.
5. Shatter the MYTHS.
• It is critical to eradicate the myths about
eating disorders so those affected can be
properly diagnosed and receive treatment.
You can help by learning the facts and
speaking up.
• Eating disorders involve more than food;
they are one of the most fatal and complex
mental illnesses.
6. The Importance of the MYTHS
Campaign
• “The reason a Myths Campaign is so important,
particularly when it comes to eating disorders, is
that it’s a highly stigmatized, highly misunderstood
disease,” said Annie Seal, Chairwoman of
MODEC.
• “Our hope with the Myths Campaign is to raise
awareness and debunk some of the stereotypes
that actually keep this disease in place. This
campaign is really important for telling the truth
about the most serious, complex, and even most
fatal of all the mental illnesses.”
7. Activating the Myths Campaign
during National Eating Disorders
Awareness Week:
• I am here as a MOEDC ambassador to
distribute materials and talking points
to each of the sorority representatives.
We are hopeful that each of you will, in
turn, make announcements at your
respective chapter meetings about the
MOEDC resources available and that
MOEDC will have a presence at the
Mizzou Speaker’s Circle on February
23-24.
8. Speaker’s Circle
• Stealth team (the marketing agency that
created the campaign and is working to get
the word out), along with MOEDC
Ambassadors, will canvas on campus
Tuesday, 2/23 and Wednesday 2/24 at
Speakers Circle. Printouts will be handed
to students encouraging them to share a
positive thought / quote / note using the
#feedthefacts in support of MOEDC
during National Eating Disorders
Awareness Week.
9. Periwinkle Post Its
• MOEDC Ambassadors will post positive thoughts /
quotes / notes in public spaces on campus
• Content – positive, uplifting, supportive, reassuring
messages can range from general to specific
• “Do not let your mind bully your body”
• “Only you can be you! And YOU are awesome!”
• “Beauty is not in the face; beauty is a light in the
heart” – Kahlil Gibran
• “Loving yourself is the greatest revolution.”
• “Take care of your body. It’s the only place you
have to live.”
