Barack Obama was the first African American president of the United States. He was born in 1961 in Hawaii to a black father from Kenya and a white mother from Kansas. After his parents separated when he was young, Obama was raised in Hawaii by his mother and grandparents. He later graduated from Columbia University and Harvard Law School, worked as a civil rights lawyer, and taught at the University of Chicago Law School. In 2008, Obama was elected president, becoming the first African American to hold the highest office in the United States.
