Carol Moseley Braun was born in Chicago in 1947 and attended local schools. She graduated from the University of Illinois and University of Chicago Law School. Braun worked as a federal prosecutor and served in the Illinois House of Representatives before becoming the first African American woman elected to the United States Senate, where she served one term from 1993 to 1999.
