Personal statement
I am a hard working student and like to work to the best of my ability. This was shown throughout my
first year university results as I finished with an average of a first degree. Working as a team has
always been a strength of mine growing up and still is to this day, growing up I was the captain of my
football team, house captain in my primary years, member of the school council during my secondary
years and now really benefit from having this as a strength from being part of the ASDA team. I have
a wide range of skills suitable in the IT industry, which I hope to help me achieve a third year
placement opportunity to improve my skills and give me a better chance of achieving a graduate job.
Current education
Birmingham City University: September 2014- Present
I am currently studying for a Bachelor of Science with Honours Business Information Technology
degree. In my first year I worked hard to achieve an average of a first degree (72.2%) which is why
this will be my goal to work towards finishing my degree to this standard.
Current employment
ASDA: June 2015- Present
I am currently working at the City's largest superstore ASDA, Minworth. I started working for ASDA in
June 2015 and am still currently a member of staff. During my time at ASDA I have been working as a
night colleague which involves getting stock from the warehouse, using a pump-truck to bring the
pallets onto the shop floor, breaking down the stock for individual aisles and then making sure the
stock is on the shelf looking good.
Working at ASDA has helped me to gain and improve many skills. The main skill I have enjoyed
developing is being a part of a team, as a night colleague you have to work very close as a team to
make sure everybody gets their stock fast so they will be able to get the aisles finished. My customer
service has also improved as I am able to listen to customers’ requests and questions, then help them
or take them to the desired location in the store they would like to get to. Working nights has helped
me improve my versatility when working as I was able to start working 4 nights a week with my body
adapting and coping with the different sleeping pattern from week to weekend.
Previous education
Park Hall Academy Sixth Form: 2012-2014
At Park Hall Academy sixth form I spent two years studying Business at AS-Level, MEDIA STUDIES
and an OCR National Level 3 in Information Technology. I achieved the highest possible mark in
Information Technology which is represented as a Distinction*, plus a double Merit in MEDIA
STUDIES. These grades along with my personal statement allowed me to receive an unconditional
offer from Birmingham City University when I applied.
Park Hall Academy: 2007-2012
During my school years I studied many subjects at GCSE level. The most notable of them being
Mathematics and English which I received a grade C, the same with Business Studies. I also was a
part of the academy council during my five years at the school which you can read more about in
'Additional information' shown below.
A full grade list for my education during school is available on request, please feel free to contact me.
Previous employment
Next Retail: 2014-2014
My short period helping with the big Christmas sale at next gave me a lot of experience which helped
me secure my current role at ASDA. A friend was working full time at Next and was told they were
short on staff and needed more help getting the sale prepared therefore provided me with his
managers number which I was then accepted to help the shop be prepared. We was even more short
staffed as expected, as being in the airport new employees needed to bring their passport to get
through security, however four of the new starters didn't bring this. Therefore we had to work fast and
as a team with a lot less numbers than we expected at the start of the night, so I offered to stay with
others to get the shop finished before I went home, which the manager and other staff were incredibly
grateful for.
Additional information
An extra-curricular activity I have undergone is the Young Business Enterprise Award competition.
During this venture, me and a few peers had to create, finance and run a small company of our own.
Our business was called ‘QWERTY’. Our entrepreneurial idea was to re-use old items such as Lego
figures, computer keys and Scrabble tiles to make jewellery. Our business became quite successful in
the competition, we took home the Green award at the Deutsche Bank, and the award for best
customer service at the Solihull Chelmsley competition. My position within the business was to be the
company finance manager, this involved handling money, projecting cash flow and allocating amounts
within our budget to different areas in the business, such as fundraising, promotion and stock.
Another achievement I am proud of was from 2008 to 2012 I was democratically elected by my peers
to the Park Hall Academy Council. We met twice every month and sometimes more for urgent issues.
The meetings agendas consisted of discussing ways to improve the school through analysing
student’s suggestions, how to raise money and where to allocate the money to. We also had guest
speakers such as the head of Solihull Council attend our meetings. This helped develop my
interpersonal skills such as confidence and public speaking, as the meetings involved lots of
discussion to large groups. Also this experience helped me develop as more of an independent
learner and worker, as tasks were often delegated to me, which had to be done independently and to
a deadline.
