The "My Colorado" student contest invites K-12 students in Colorado to create an original work illustrating what makes their region of the state unique and why they love Colorado. Winning entries and their guests will attend the gubernatorial inauguration ceremony and lunch. The contest encourages using any medium to depict Colorado's beauty and diversity, with an emphasis on students' passion for and knowledge of their local area. Submissions are due by December 10th and winners will be selected on December 14th.

1. “My Colorado” Statewide Student Contest
Colorado Can Do invites K-12 students from across the state to enter the “My
Colorado” contest. Students are asked to create an original and innovative piece of
work based on the theme: “My Colorado.” This experience will challenge students to
illustrate what makes their region of the state unique and why they love Colorado.
Entry winners, along with their classmates and two family members, will be given
the opportunity to join John Hickenlooper and Joe Garcia for the Gubernatorial
Inauguration Ceremony and Student Lunch. Students will also have the chance to
see history in the making at the swearing-in ceremony of the 42nd Governor of
Colorado.
Governor-elect John Hickenlooper and Lt. Governor-elect Joe Garcia have
made a commitment to improving Colorado schools. When Hickenlooper was first
elected as the mayor of Denver, he visited all 151 Denver Public Schools in order to
gain a better understanding of the challenges facing our classrooms. As Governor,
he will show that same commitment to statewide education. Hickenlooper has
already begun fulfilling this goal by selecting a leader in Colorado education as his
Lieutenant Governor, former Colorado State University-Pueblo President Joe Garcia,
as well as creating a new and innovative plan to reform education.
Colorado Can Do invites K-12 students to explore their passion for Colorado.
This contest encourages students to use any type of medium that best explains what
makes their region of the state uniquely fantastic. For example, one student could
write an essay about living in Crowley County, while another might create a video
about life in Salida.
Projects will be judged on innovation, creativity, knowledge of their regional
history, and a clear explanation of the piece of work. Students who do not write an
essay must also include a paragraph description of their project. Students are
responsible for submitting their project either online or via mail. They must be
emailed by December 10th, 2010 or postmarked by December 8th, 2010. The
Colorado Can Do Committee will select the winners on December 14th, 2010. The
judge’s decisions are final.
Student projects selected will win the opportunity to attend the
Gubernatorial Inauguration Ceremony and Student Lunch on January 11th, 2011
with their classmates and two family members. Colorado Can Do will transport
students in to attend both events free of cost to the families and school. Please see

2. Colorado Can Do- Competition
Topic:
In whatever medium you choose, please depict the following:
Colorado is beautiful and diverse. From the Eastern Plains to the Western Slope,
there are so many reasons to love this state. Why do you love Colorado? What
makes your region of the state special? Please be creative and use some historical
context.
Qualifications:
• All Colorado Elementary, Middle and High School students are encouraged to
participate.
• All projects must be original.
Requirements:
There are no limitations on what sort of a project you can do, however there are a
few requirements. The project has to be sent via email or traditional mail. It is up to
the student to get it to the committee. Every project, unless it is an essay, must have
a one-paragraph description explaining what the student is trying to accomplish.
Finally, a teacher or administrator must sponsor each student contestant.
Criteria:
The judges will be comprised of our Colorado Can Do Committee. They will be
judging on the following criteria:
• Innovation
• Creativity
• Knowledge of the regional history
• Passion for Colorado

• December 8th, 2010- All mailed submissions must be postmarked by this
date.
• 5PM, December 10th, 2010- E-mailed submissions must be sent.
• December 14th, 2010- Winners will be selected.
• January 11th, 2011- Inauguration Ceremony and Student Lunch.
