ABSTRACT
This present research study was conducted to examine different factors influencing
the academicperformanceof secondary school studentsin Lokoja local government
of Kogistate, Nigeria. The respondentsfor this study were Senior SecondarySchool
1 (SS1) students. The variablesunderconsideration weretheacademicperformance
(student’s grades/marks) as a dependent variable and social economic factors –
parents’ educational status, parents’ occupation, and family size (number of
children in the family). A survey was conducted by using questionnaire for
information gathering about different factors relating to academic performance of
students. The data were collected from 100 students from which 75 was retrieved.
The academic performance was gauged by the result of their JSS 3 state unified
examination. Descriptive statistics – frequency counts and percentages, and
inferential statistics – independent sample t-test and ANOVA were applied to
investigate the effect of different socio-economic factors of parents on students’
achievement. The results of the study revealed that mothers’ education level and
fathers’ occupation have a significant effect on students’ overall academic
achievement. Family size was found to have no effect on students’ academic
performance.
