The Union Budget 2013-2014 proposed by Finance Minister Chidambaram allocated funds across several key sectors of the Indian economy. Some highlights include allocating 10 billion rupees for India's first public women's bank, 6275 crore for technology ministries, 2 trillion for defense, 7 lakh crore target for agricultural credit, 4,727 crore for medical education and research, 41,561 crore for Scheduled Castes plan and 24,598 crore for tribal plan, and 14,000 crore capital infusion for public sector banks. The budget also raised duty-free limits for imports and provided incentives for wind energy projects.

2. WHAT IS UNION BUDGET?
The Union Budget is the financial annual report
of India as a country. It contains the government of
India's revenue and expenditure for the end of a
particular fiscal year, which runs from April 1 to
March 31 It comprises the revenue budget and the
capital budget. It also contains estimates for the
next fiscal year.
 Finance Minister Chidambaram Palaniappan
proposed Union Budget 2013-2014 in Lok
Shabha.

3. WOMEN SECTOR
 10 billion rupees for establishing India's first public
all-women bank, which will lend money to
businesses run by women, will mainly employ
women, and will support women employment.
 Another 2.5 billion rupees for groups like single
women and widows.
 Rs. 1,000 crore for women & youth funds

Duty-free limits raised to Rs 50000 for men and Rs
1 lakh for women

4. TECHNOLOGY AND DEFENCE SECTOR:
 "Rs 6275 crore to Ministry of Technology, Rs 5216
crore to Department of Space, Rs 5280 crore to
Department of Energy. These amounts are
substantial increases."
 Rs. 2 trillion for defence sector

5. AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION:
 Rs 7 lakh crore target fixed for agri credit for 2013—14 compare to 5.75
lakhs crore in previous year.
 Eastern Indian states to get Rs 1,000 crore allocation for improving
agricultural production.
 Rs 500 crore allocated for programme on crop diversification
 Foodgrain production in 2012—13 will be over 250 million tons
 Rs 80,194 crore allocation for Ministry of Rural Development in 2013—
14.
 Rs 27,049 crore allocation to the Agriculture Ministry in 2013—14
 Rs 14,873 crore for urban transportation in 2013—14.

6. MEDICAL EDUCATION:
 Rs 4,727 crore to be allocated for medical education
and research.
 Medical colleges in six more AIIMS—like institutions to
start functioning this year; Rs 1650 crore allocated for
the purpose.
 Rs 37,330 crore allocated for Ministry of Health & Family
Welfare.
 Rs 13215 crore for mid-day meal programme:
 Rs 1069 crore given for development of
Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani (Natural medicine) and
homeopathy

7. TRIBAL PLAN AND ENERGY
RESOURCES:
 Rs 41,561 crore for SC plan and Rs 24,598 crore for
tribal plan.
 Generation based incentives to wind energy projects
reintroduced, Rs 800 crore provided for the purpose to
Ministry of New & Renewable Energy
 On oil and gas exploration policy, the Budget proposes
to move from the present profit sharing mechanism to
revenue sharing. Natural gas pricing policy will be
reviewed.

8. POWER & WATER TRANSPORT
SECTOR:
 Govt to construct power transmission system from
Srinagar to Ladakh at the cost of Rs 1,840crore, Rs
226 crore provided for two new ports in West
Bengal and Andhra Pradesh

9. BANK SECTORS:
Government will provide Rs 14000-crore capital
infusion in state-run (public-sector) banks in 2013/14 .
Rs. 14,000 crore will be provided to public sector banks
for capital infusion in 2013-14.
First home loan from a bank or housing finance
corporation upto Rs. 25 lakh entitled to additional
deduction of interest upto Rs. 1 lakh.
All public-sector banks have assured the Finance
Minister that they will all have ATMs in their branch
areas by 2014
