Musical instruments can be classified into strings, wind, and percussion. Strings produce sound through vibrating strings, like guitars and violins. Wind instruments use a vibrating air column made by blowing through a reed or lips to make sounds, such as flutes, clarinets, and trumpets. Percussion instruments create noise through being struck, shaken, or scraped, like xylophones, drums, and tambourines. Orchestras and bands are musical ensembles that perform music led by a conductor.
