1. Music Video Proposal.
Deviant?
A proposal for a new music video for a single by the band ‘Hare of the Dog’, the single is called
‘Deviant?’
Synopsis/Over view:
The video will be a concept piece that follows a surreal narrative throughout, although the story will
seem irrelevant and strange the underlying intent will be to ask the very question asked in the title
of the song ‘Deviant?’ The story will follow an arrogant persistent law man on his hap hazard journey
to apprehend a group of friends for a minor offence. He will alienate people along the way painting
himself antagonistically for the audience. The offence in question will be witnessed by a busker, who
will provide moments of lip syncing and a performance element, this will allow them to commentate
on the events unfolding in the story. The resolution of the incident will result in the knowledge that
the mysterious package was nothing more than a box of éclairs being taken to a party where the
guests will use sweets instead of drugs and alcohol. This dichotomy between the innocence of
people enjoying sweets and the stereotypical drug taker will provide the message element of the
video and confront the audience’s perception of deviance. The video will conclude with a conflict
between the group of friends and the law man, where in a struggle he tastes some chocolate from
an éclair, and joins the party.
Styling:
The styling of the video will be indicative of the comedic undertones, I will be drawing on the
costume of the central character in the red hot chilli peppers music video ‘By the way’. A seventies
moustache and aviator sunglasses representing a time when cop dramas were silly and all together
less realistic. The mise en scene will be achieved through the use of childish props, fake police badge
etc. The styling of the other characters will be somewhat rough round the edges and portraying
them as alternatives or underdogs. This matches the bands style and genre and will be a good visual
portrayal of deviance making the juxtaposition of sweets against drugs more humorous and more
unexpected. Not to mention more surreal. As is often the case with concept videos, the more surreal
the more memorable and more captivating. Ultimately this video should be taking as fun and light
hearted if not challenging your perceptions of what those things mean.
