Music Video Analysis - Gender Roles
Song Title: Dilemma
Artist: Nelly and Kelly Rowlands

Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with
as much detail as possible.
1. What are the men/women doing? (Dancing, sitting, swimming, etc.)
Both Nelly and Kelly are dancing in the middle of the street.

2. How are the men/women dressed? How much skin is revealed?
Nelly is dressed In a baggy top with tracksuit bottoms on, along with gold chains and a
sweat band. This represents a sort of typical gangsta style. Also Nelly has a plaster on his
face which could suggest he has been involved with violence.
Kelly is wearing a small yellow top, revealing her stomach and chest area, which jeans
and high heels. This could suggest she is trying to seduce Nelly, as she wants you to see
her feminine qualities.

3. Are there more, fewer, or the same number of men as women?
There are fewer women shown in the video as there are men, as straight away a gang of
Nelly’s gansta friends are shown sitting together in a garden, with their huge speakers and
money.
Kelly is the dominant woman. As she is the only woman shown in the video apart from
her mother who appears nearer towards the end of the video. This suggests all attention
must be on her, as she is Nelly’s love interest.

4. Describe the body language of the men/women: are they sitting, standing, gyrating,
mugging, etc.?
Both Nelly and Kelly dance extremely close together, holding each other. Showing the
audience how they feel about each other. They are doing this in the middle of the road,
which suggests they don’t care about their surroundings, just each other.

There is no sense of a power struggle between both of the artists, although Nelly is
represented more of a gangsta and seems to be involved with gangs of men. Kelly is
shown as a more innocent character, still lives with her mother although she is falling for
this gangsta, thuggish man.

6. What’s the message of the song?
The message of the song seems to be about love, and how you can be dominant so much
by what you want. As Kelly is shown to be in a relationship with another man, she then
falls in love with Nelly.

7. What type of music is the song?
This song would be classed under the RnB genre.

Song Title: Beautiful
Artist: Snoop Dogg and Pharrel

Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with
as much detail as possible.
1. What races do you see represented?
This music video only has Black Cubans, as this is what Snoop Dogg is singing
about. The fact he is attracted to this type of girl.

2. Are there any dark skinned women shown? How many?
There are many dark skinned women, wearing bikini’s lay on the beach. This presents
them as a sexual object for men, they are using their womanly features to attract
attention from the men in the music video.

3. What is the race of the person at the focus of the video?
Snoop Dogg is Black, from California.

4. What are the black/Latino/Asian/white/Native American/Pacific Islander people
Doing?
They are sexually dancing, using their body to seduce the opposite gender, creating a
negative representation of woman as they are dressed with limited revealing clothing.
The men are also dominating the women, as they are using their power to control them.
As at the start of the video it shows Snoop Dogg getting his hair brushed by a woman in a
bikini.

5. What’s the message of the song?
Snoop Dogg and Pharrel repeatedly tell each woman they come across that they are
beautiful; all women have different body shapes and hair styles, which suggest they are
trying to create a message to the audience telling us each woman is beautiful, no matter
how they look or what race they are.

6. What type of music is the song?
This music is rap/RnB.

Song Title: Wrecking Ball
Artist: Miley Cyrus
Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with
as much detail as possible.
1. Describe any sexually explicit body language:
Miley swings around on a wrecking ball, wearing very limited clothing and big building
boots. She also lies on the floor with her legs open, this shows us her vulnerability and
emotion, she wants the audience to feel her weakness towards the man she is singing
about.

2. Who is more sexualized – men or women? Both?
There are no men in the music video, or other women except Miley. Miley presents
herself to us naked, showing all her flesh and womanly features. As the song is quite
emotional and deep, the fact she is naked unfortunately takes all attention away from
that point. For example the video shows Miley licking a sledge hammer, symbolising
phallic qualities.

3. Are there sexually explicit lyrics or messages?
There are no sexual lyrics; however Miley creates a message to the audience, representing
women as vulnerable and weak displaying her body to the viewers. She also creates an
explicit message as she licks the sledge hammer, almost saying to the person she’s singing
about she is still willing to be sexually involved with them.

4. How are subjects of the music video dressed?
As the setting of the music video is on a building site, you would expect Miley to be
dressed appropriately for that particular setting. However she goes against this and is
wearing her underwear, and boots.

5. Describe the relationships between the men and women: Are they long or short term?
Casual or serious?
The relationship was serious, however it came to an emotional end when the man broke
up with the girl.

6. What’s the message of the song?
The message of the song was mainly, the women wanting to express and let people know
how vulnerable and fragile she has become now she has been left from her partner.

7. What type of music is the song?
The genre of this song would be classed as pop.

Song Title: Dirt Off Your Shoulder
Artist: Jay Z
Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with
as much detail as possible.
1. Describe the products that are highlighted in the video: (cars, jewelry, clothes, etc.)
There are highlighted products in this music video such as branded cars, designer clothes
and chains. Also designer caps which a lot of the cast wear, could be promoting the brand.

2. Are any brand names shown?
There are no particular brand names shown, just logo’s and the actual product.

3. How is wealth defined in the video?
Jay Z raps about his wealth within his lyrics, for example he states he’s come from the
very bottom, and worked is way too the top business wise. Through his music career and
having a confident personality.

4. Are products mentioned in the song lyrics?
He raps about the amount of awards he has won over his music career, and how he has
experienced all the glitz and glam. The life everybody dreams of.

5. What’s the message of the song?
The message Jay Z is trying to get across to the audience is positive. He’s simply saying
don’t be afraid to show your confidence, use anything you can to earn your money and
life and don’t be ashamed of it. The title itself ‘Dirt Of Your Shoulder’ implies this alone.

Music Video Analysis - Violence
Song Title:Rella
Artist: Hodgy Beats ft Tyler the Creator
Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with
as much detail as possible.
1. Describe any violent lyrics in the song:
The lyrics within the song describe physically slapping people, and calling people
inappropriate words. Also there is bragging of taking drugs and performing sexual acts to
women.

2. Describe any violent body language:
In the video there are cars being smashed and women sticking their middle finger up at
people, creating a negative representation of black women.
Also a black man approaches a child and snatches his drink and stamps on it with his feet.
Which also is creating a violent negative representation of black men.

3. Describe any violent actions or weapons that are shown:
A black man physically punches another man.
Also illegal substances are shown in the music video, which are being taken by the artists.
This gives a negative message to the audience, almost encouraging fans of the artist to
also take this substance. As it is presented as acceptable.

4. Describe any self-mutilation or violence:

There is no blood of body parts shown in this music video.

5. What’s the message of the song?
There is no moral to this music video, it mainly presents black men and women as violent,
as they display very explicit behaviour. The music video is almost telling the audience it is
acceptable to take drugs, perform sexual activities in public and also be physically and
verbally violent to another person. Overall this music video has put forward a very
negative message.

6. What type of music is the song?
This genre of music would be classed as rap.

Unit 29 – Music Video Production Music Video Analysis Worksheets Music Video Analysis - Gender Roles Song Title: Dilemma Artist: Nelly and Kelly Rowlands Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with as much detail as possible. 1. What are the men/women doing? (Dancing, sitting, swimming, etc.) Both Nelly and Kelly are dancing in the middle of the street. 2. How are the men/women dressed? How much skin is revealed? Nelly is dressed In a baggy top with tracksuit bottoms on, along with gold chains and a sweat band. This represents a sort of typical gangsta style. Also Nelly has a plaster on his face which could suggest he has been involved with violence. Kelly is wearing a small yellow top, revealing her stomach and chest area, which jeans and high heels. This could suggest she is trying to seduce Nelly, as she wants you to see her feminine qualities. 3. Are there more, fewer, or the same number of men as women? There are fewer women shown in the video as there are men, as straight away a gang of Nelly’s gansta friends are shown sitting together in a garden, with their huge speakers and money. Kelly is the dominant woman. As she is the only woman shown in the video apart from her mother who appears nearer towards the end of the video. This suggests all attention must be on her, as she is Nelly’s love interest. 4. Describe the body language of the men/women: are they sitting, standing, gyrating, mugging, etc.? Both Nelly and Kelly dance extremely close together, holding each other. Showing the audience how they feel about each other. They are doing this in the middle of the road, which suggests they don’t care about their surroundings, just each other. 5. Do the men/women have power? How do you know?

Kelly is shown as a more innocent character, still lives with her mother although she is falling for this gangsta, thuggish man. 6. What’s the message of the song? The message of the song seems to be about love, and how you can be dominant so much by what you want. As Kelly is shown to be in a relationship with another man, she then falls in love with Nelly. 7. What type of music is the song? This song would be classed under the RnB genre. Music Video Analysis - Race Song Title: Beautiful Artist: Snoop Dogg and Pharrel Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with as much detail as possible. 1. What races do you see represented? This music video only has Black Cubans, as this is what Snoop Dogg is singing about. The fact he is attracted to this type of girl. 2. Are there any dark skinned women shown? How many? There are many dark skinned women, wearing bikini’s lay on the beach. This presents them as a sexual object for men, they are using their womanly features to attract attention from the men in the music video.

What are the black/Latino/Asian/white/Native American/Pacific Islander people Doing? They are sexually dancing, using their body to seduce the opposite gender, creating a negative representation of woman as they are dressed with limited revealing clothing. The men are also dominating the women, as they are using their power to control them. As at the start of the video it shows Snoop Dogg getting his hair brushed by a woman in a bikini. 5. What’s the message of the song? Snoop Dogg and Pharrel repeatedly tell each woman they come across that they are beautiful; all women have different body shapes and hair styles, which suggest they are trying to create a message to the audience telling us each woman is beautiful, no matter how they look or what race they are. 6. What type of music is the song? This music is rap/RnB. Music Video Analysis - Sexuality Song Title: Wrecking Ball Artist: Miley Cyrus Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with as much detail as possible. 1. Describe any sexually explicit body language: Miley swings around on a wrecking ball, wearing very limited clothing and big building boots. She also lies on the floor with her legs open, this shows us her vulnerability and emotion, she wants the audience to feel her weakness towards the man she is singing about.

Miley presents herself to us naked, showing all her flesh and womanly features. As the song is quite emotional and deep, the fact she is naked unfortunately takes all attention away from that point. For example the video shows Miley licking a sledge hammer, symbolising phallic qualities. 3. Are there sexually explicit lyrics or messages? There are no sexual lyrics; however Miley creates a message to the audience, representing women as vulnerable and weak displaying her body to the viewers. She also creates an explicit message as she licks the sledge hammer, almost saying to the person she’s singing about she is still willing to be sexually involved with them. 4. How are subjects of the music video dressed? As the setting of the music video is on a building site, you would expect Miley to be dressed appropriately for that particular setting. However she goes against this and is wearing her underwear, and boots. 5. Describe the relationships between the men and women: Are they long or short term? Casual or serious? The relationship was serious, however it came to an emotional end when the man broke up with the girl. 6. What’s the message of the song? The message of the song was mainly, the women wanting to express and let people know how vulnerable and fragile she has become now she has been left from her partner. 7. What type of music is the song? The genre of this song would be classed as pop. Music Video Analysis - Materialism

Unit 29 – Music Video Production Music Video Analysis Worksheets Song Title: Dirt Off Your Shoulder Artist: Jay Z Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with as much detail as possible. 1. Describe the products that are highlighted in the video: (cars, jewelry, clothes, etc.) There are highlighted products in this music video such as branded cars, designer clothes and chains. Also designer caps which a lot of the cast wear, could be promoting the brand. 2. Are any brand names shown? There are no particular brand names shown, just logo’s and the actual product. 3. How is wealth defined in the video? Jay Z raps about his wealth within his lyrics, for example he states he’s come from the very bottom, and worked is way too the top business wise. Through his music career and having a confident personality. 4. Are products mentioned in the song lyrics? He raps about the amount of awards he has won over his music career, and how he has experienced all the glitz and glam. The life everybody dreams of. 5. What’s the message of the song? The message Jay Z is trying to get across to the audience is positive. He’s simply saying don’t be afraid to show your confidence, use anything you can to earn your money and life and don’t be ashamed of it. The title itself ‘Dirt Of Your Shoulder’ implies this alone.

Music Video Analysis - Violence Song Title:Rella Artist: Hodgy Beats ft Tyler the Creator Directions: As you closely watch the music video, answer the following questions with as much detail as possible. 1. Describe any violent lyrics in the song: The lyrics within the song describe physically slapping people, and calling people inappropriate words. Also there is bragging of taking drugs and performing sexual acts to women. 2. Describe any violent body language: In the video there are cars being smashed and women sticking their middle finger up at people, creating a negative representation of black women. Also a black man approaches a child and snatches his drink and stamps on it with his feet. Which also is creating a violent negative representation of black men. 3. Describe any violent actions or weapons that are shown: A black man physically punches another man. Also illegal substances are shown in the music video, which are being taken by the artists. This gives a negative message to the audience, almost encouraging fans of the artist to also take this substance. As it is presented as acceptable. 4. Describe any self-mutilation or violence: There is no blood of body parts shown in this music video.

The music video is almost telling the audience it is acceptable to take drugs, perform sexual activities in public and also be physically and verbally violent to another person. Overall this music video has put forward a very negative message. 6. What type of music is the song? This genre of music would be classed as rap.
