 Mushroom farming is one of the most profitable agri-business that
you can start with a low investment and less space. Mushroom
cultivation in India is growing gradually as an alternative source of
income for many people. Worldwide, US, China, Italy and
Netherlands are the top producers of mushrooms.
 The lockdown has sparked new opportunity and fungi farms are
mushrooming across the country. Many predict that mushrooms are
the next high value agriculture crop which can transform incomes of
small and marginal farmers.
 The global mushroom market size was valued at USD 50.3 billion in
2021 and is expected to expand at a compound annual growth rate
(CAGR) of 9.7% from 2022 to 2030.
3
Cultivating a mushroom
requires a little land or space,
and this is one of the biggest
reasons a mushroom is
extremely appreciated
amongst the marginal
landholders. Taking up
mushroom farming as a
business can help the farmers
with some additional income,
specifically in their lean
season.

WHAT'S THE MARKETING STRATEGY TO SELL MUSHROOMS ?
Restaurants- The growing consumer awareness around the health benefits of
mushrooms has led to a sharp rise in demand. Restaurants and hotels are quickly
incorporating mushrooms into their menus. Thus, this would be a great channel for
you to reach out to.
6
◍ Selling online-
This is a great way to sell
your mushrooms if you are
looking for convenience.
Check out apps like
Farmsnation which aim to
empower farmers by
helping them find
customers in their area.
◍ Packaged products-
Customers today are
open to trying new
foods, and food
producers are making
use of this opportunity.
7
 Mushroom cultivators are facing major problems like
storage, defaulters, advertising and transport. They
are also facing problems relating to productions,
which are high price of spawn, infestation of fly and
cockroaches, and high temperature, marketing,
technical and awareness problems.
8
FINANCING STRATEGY
How Much Does It Cost To Start a Mushroom Farm?
Production costs – This includes the cost of buying spawn, substrate, grow
bags, gloves and other consumables that you’ll use in your business.
The more mushrooms that you grow, the more of these things you’ll have to
pay for.
Business overheads – This includes things like rent, taxes, telephone bills,
utilities, employee labor and interest on loans.
Someone who is starting off in a shed or garage that they already own might
only need to invest in the equipment and materials that they’ll need.
9
 What Prices Should You Charge?
 Depending on where in the world your mushroom business is located,
we’ve seen mushrooms range in price from about 413 Rupees to 1241
rupees per kilo.
 If you’re selling directly to customers, you may even be able to charge
more than that.
 The existing market in your area will largely dictate how much you can
charge for your mushrooms.
 In an area with lots of competition, you may need to offer your
mushrooms at a slightly lower price.
 Although if your mushrooms are fresher and of higher quality than your
competitors, then you can still charge more for them.
10
 How Much Investment Do You Need for a Mushroom Farm?
 For a small Low Tech Mushroom Farm, we recommend having an investment of at
least 1,25,000 to 1,50,000 Rupees to get started.
11
 Is Mushroom Cultivation a Profitable Business?
 Cultivating mushrooms can be very profitable. On our small mushroom farm,
we’ve been able to generate more than 18,00,000 to 20,00,000 approximately in
sales per year in small scale business .
 The typical production cost for mushrooms is about 413 rupees per kilo. You
can sell those same mushrooms for 780 rupees to 1000 rupees per kilo (367
rupees to 587 rupees revenue you earn per kilo).
12
HR STRATEGY
The Human Resource Strategies basically deals with the training and reccruting
methods of employees.
The term mushroom management refers to a style management where employees
(who are illustrated as mushrooms) are kept in the dark and periodically given a load of
manure. The “mushroom managers” could be described as managers who plant their
employees knee-deep (or worse) in the smelly stuff and keep them in the dark. In
practice, this means employees would get to do all the work that they do not want.
Managers do not communicate and generally ignore their employees, so employees do
not know the company’s plan or what else might be going on in the organisation.
13
A mushroom manager can be
annoying at some point as they
might hold employees back
from career progression and
give little opportunity for
employees to shine. The best
thing to handle is to be
assertive with this type of
manager. Talk to them about
what they are doing and the
effect they are having. Do not
lie down and be the doormat
who says “thank you” for any
scraps they care to throw at
you.
14
OPERATION STRATEGY
Starting a small business like mushroom farming requires a specific
business plan. Work out a detailed budget; write out a clear strategy and
objectives for your business, what will be the variety you want to grow,
and what will be your target market like domestic or export.
Day-21 Day-25
15
The mushroom farming business is also evolving fast. The demand for
specialty mushrooms is on the rise. Some of the areas other than food
items that are poised to grow are the following:
 Mushroom supplements
 Fungi as food additives
 Ready-to-fruit blocks
 Textiles
 Mycoremediation
 Mental health
Day-28
16
PRODUCTION &
OPERATION
Mushrooms are commercially grown on mushroom farms, in dark
buildings. The process of growing mushrooms consists of 6 steps, which
are composting, finishing the compost, spawning, casing, and cropping.
Mushrooms are very healthy, and a great source of many nutrients.
Mushroom production utilizes controlled environments just like nearly all
other food crops grown in soilless culture; in fact, mushroom production
was one of the first industries to utilize vertical farming techniques! To
maximize mushroom growth and development, rooms with controllable air
temperature and humidity are best.
17
The mushroom cultivation is carried out partly in laboratory under aseptic
conditions and other in mushroom house. Good spawn production from
monosporeculture is one of the methods of production. It should be fresh, fast
growing, free from insects, moulds and mites for production of mushroom the
required temperature is minimum 10* C and maximum 30* C.
We can do mushroom farming at any location there is no specific area or place
required for that.
We can produce mushroom at any place with sufficient
 Temperature,
 Moisture &
 Fresh air
18
IMPLEMENTATION
CULTIVATION The basic requirements for mushroom cultivation are manure/compost, spawns, right
temperature and humidity. Favorable growing conditions involve 80%-90% of relative humidity, ample
ventilation, a temperature range of 20-280 C during spawn run and 12-180 C for reproductive growth.
Compost Preparation The compost (synthetic or natural) used for mushroom growth usually comprises
of wheat straws, horse manure, poultry manure, rice bran, gypsum etc.
Spawning Spawns refers to the mycelium carefully propagated on agars or grains. Spawning is a process of
sowing or mixing spawns in compost. Although mushroom produces spores which acts as a seed for
further propagation but are not used generally due to uncertain germination and growth.

Mushroom Cultivation
Casing is a kind of sterilized soil or dressing containing cow manure which is spread onto the spawn mixed
compost. It is applied when the mycelium growth commences on the compost surface. After 15 to 20 days of
its application mushroom head or pins start becoming visible on the surface.
HARVESTING is done by plucking them from soil using hands or the heads are chopped off using knife. The
harvested mushrooms are then subjected to primary processing.
PROCESSING Mushroom are very fragile and have a short shelf life, unless consumed fresh. At ambient
temperature hey lose their freshness within a day and deteriorates rapidly if not processed or refrigerated.
Canning involves preservation in brine, vinegar, oil or marinades. Freshly harvested mushrooms are utilized for
canning purpose. Pickling is an age old method which utilizes spice, salt, vinegar and oil as the basic
ingredients for food preservation.

FINANCIAL ANALYSIS
22
23
Other Investment which can be generally used for one crop cycle are given here
Casing Oil, 2000 kg @2.5/kg : Rs 5000.00
100 spawn @70/kg costs: Rs 7000.00
The cost of 6 labour person @300/day : Rs 30,000.00
Other charges like transport, etc.: Rs 10,000.00
Mushroom Farming Project Report – Total charges amount to Rs 52,500
Mushroom Farming Project Report – Total investment in mushroom farming is : Rs
1,81,820.00
24
There is a 12% and 5% interest and depreciation charged on the fixed assets which
amount to Rs 8806.00
So, the total investment is summed up to : (Rs. 1,81,820.00 + Rs 8806.00) Rs. 1,90,626.00
3000 kg of mushrooms are produced per shed and sold @100/kg : Rs. 3,00,000.00
Therefore,
The total profit generated in mushroom farming can be estimated as Rs 1,09,374.00
