The Hellenic Maritime Museum
• The Hellenic Maritime Museum was
established in 1949 in Piraeus, following the
completion of a written agreement with the
Government and the promotion of its
founders, who were reputable citizens of
Piraeus and greek navy officers.
• The main purposes of the museum, amongst
others, were the research, retrieval,
preservation and exhibition of our national
naval relics, the study and documentation of
our naval history and the rescue and
promotion of our naval heritage.
• The museum is situated today in a privately
owned building in Freattida, Piraeus, which
was built in 1969, on the premises granted by
OLP and EOT.
• It has a surface area of approximately 1,700
sq. meters and its entrance has incorporated
a part of the well known Konon Walls that
protected the ancient harbor.
• More than 2.500 items that are
chronologically and thematically classified
are exhibited here and are open to the public,
including those from the Maritime Library.
• In its outer area one can admire beautiful
sculptures and important outdoor exhibits,
such as that of the turret of the historical
submarine "Papanikolis" as well as ship
anchors from the naval battle of Navarino.
• Since 1993 the museum has organized
educational programs for students that promote
teaching based on personal experience and
interference with our nautical history and
tradition . These programs also promote a
creative and direct student contact with the
museum collections, keeping the general public
aware of issues such as that of the protection of
our marine environment. Moreover, the
museum has developed a rich publishing work,
which includes mainly books on issues related to
our greek naval history.
ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF PIRAEUS
• The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus,
which is located in Piraeus whose collection
includes mainly finds of excavations, covering
the period from the Mycenaean to the
Roman times. It is located in the area
between Terpsithea and Pasalimani.
• The first museum was founded in 1935 at the
site of the ancient theater of Zea and was
housed in a building that now functions as a
sculpture store. Since 1960, he has gathered
most of the findings of excavations that took
place in the municipalities of Piraeus and
other nearby municipalities.
• His collection was also enriched by important
donations, such as the Nomidou and
Valsamaki Collection, as well as the
Gerulanos collection.
• The present-day museum was formed as an
extension of the old one and was
inaugurated in 1981. In 1996 renovations
began and in 1988 two new halls were
opened, one dedicated to the role of Piraeus
in antiquity as a naval and commercial center

• The core of its collection is the monuments
from the northern cemetery of the ancient
city and other random finds that were
revealed during the construction of the
modern city. His most important exhibits are
also the series of neo-theatrical plaques from
the sinking of a Roman ship to the port of
Piraeus, the finds of the sanctuary of Municia
and those of the sanctuary of the Mother of
Gods of Moschato.
• It has a total area of 1394 sq.m. The
exhibition grounds occupy ten halls on both
floors, while in the basement there are the
maintenance workshops
• The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus offers
the visitor the representative and complete
picture of the history of the city, which in
antiquity has become very popular both as a
commercial center of the eastern Mediterranean
and as a naval shipyard of ancient Athens. The
kind of his exhibits, mainly from the wider area
of Piraeus and the Attic beach. Its exhibition
grounds occupy the ten halls on the two floors
(1,044 sq. M.), while in the basement (350 sq.
M.)

• There are the workshops for the maintenance of clay,
metal and stone objects, as well as the museum's
store where archaeological finds from the area of
Piraeus, the coastal zone and the islands. The main
work of the museum, supervised by the Ephorate of
Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, is the gathering,
preservation, recording and guarding of old and new
movable finds from the wider area of Piraeus. Its
activities include the organization of educational
programs, lectures and other cultural events, as well
as the gradual improvement of the building's
infrastructure to better serve the visitors.

Museums of Piraeus

  • 2. The Hellenic Maritime Museum • The Hellenic Maritime Museum was established in 1949 in Piraeus, following the completion of a written agreement with the Government and the promotion of its founders, who were reputable citizens of Piraeus and greek navy officers.
  • 3. • The main purposes of the museum, amongst others, were the research, retrieval, preservation and exhibition of our national naval relics, the study and documentation of our naval history and the rescue and promotion of our naval heritage.
  • 4. • The museum is situated today in a privately owned building in Freattida, Piraeus, which was built in 1969, on the premises granted by OLP and EOT.
  • 5. • It has a surface area of approximately 1,700 sq. meters and its entrance has incorporated a part of the well known Konon Walls that protected the ancient harbor.
  • 6. • More than 2.500 items that are chronologically and thematically classified are exhibited here and are open to the public, including those from the Maritime Library.
  • 7. • In its outer area one can admire beautiful sculptures and important outdoor exhibits, such as that of the turret of the historical submarine "Papanikolis" as well as ship anchors from the naval battle of Navarino.
  • 8. • Since 1993 the museum has organized educational programs for students that promote teaching based on personal experience and interference with our nautical history and tradition . These programs also promote a creative and direct student contact with the museum collections, keeping the general public aware of issues such as that of the protection of our marine environment. Moreover, the museum has developed a rich publishing work, which includes mainly books on issues related to our greek naval history.
  • 9. ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF PIRAEUS • The Archaeological Museum of Piraeus, which is located in Piraeus whose collection includes mainly finds of excavations, covering the period from the Mycenaean to the Roman times. It is located in the area between Terpsithea and Pasalimani.
