Cultural education plays a decisive role in constructing the young European generation; it
represents the key to the development of a society of communication, exchange of ideas,
values and tolerance on a sustainable basis.
Culture is the sum of human products designed for social interaction events. Language,
gestures and manners code, creative art and music, traditions, customs, beliefs and practices
are all individual and community values both cultivated and respected in society.
Culture also means knowledge acquired through learning. Through culture one can define
personal identity, local, national and supranational. Intercultural dialogue mediates the
strengthening of communication ways and exchange networks. Cultural education plays a
fundamental role in shaping Europe's young generation, it is the key to the development on a
sustainable basis of a society of communication, exchange of ideas and values, tolerance.
The museum – nucleus of research and reflection, on one side, and space of encounter and
dialogue, on the other side – preserves vestiges of material culture, thus mediating the public
access to the non-material dimension of culture. Thereby, artistic, spiritual and identity
values are put across society, in particular across the youth. Beyond scientific activities (such
as conservation and study), European museums are nowadays called upon to compete with
challenging alternative offers within the market place as well as upon meeting the latest

4. demands made by a culturally diverse youth. In this particular context, we ask ourselves how
museums can still attract a young audience and how they can keep the interest of this
audience alive? The “Youth and Museums” project searches for solutions to these key-
issues.
