Muscles are comprised of muscle tissues which contain myofibrils made up of thick and thin filaments. Skeletal muscle fibers contain repeating units called sarcomeres made of myosin thick filaments and actin thin filaments. Neuromuscular junctions transmit signals from motor neurons to trigger calcium release and contraction via troponin-tropomyosin interactions exposing actin binding sites. The sliding filament model describes skeletal muscle shortening through myosin crossbridges pulling actin filaments toward the center.
