In areas with abundant groundwater, single village schemes will be encouraged with sustainability measures. Where groundwater is scarce, especially in designated "dark blocks" and areas with water quality issues, multi-village surface water schemes will be promoted. The government of Karnataka has taken several initiatives to plan and implement multi-village schemes across the state, with substantial investment to create assets for bulk water supply. These multi-village schemes involve drawing water from distant perennial surface sources, treating it to make it potable, and distributing it to village-level storage tanks.
