What is Popular Music?
For the purposes of my paper:
“…the pieces which are demonstrably the most popular
items of ‘popular music’ with the most widely
disseminated items of music disseminated in the
mass media”
~Middleton~
What is Performance?
“Performance” is referring to the act of interacting
with sound in a meaningful way that creates an
experience
~ Derived from Ramos- Kittrell ~
Why Classical Music?
It is not “popular”
It has a stigma attached to it (stuffy or upscale)
It has a typical group of followers
The performances associated with it are rule- bound
History of Classical Music Open-
Mic Night
Founded June 2011 by Mark Landson
Since then have had over 100 performances
Have featured over 100 different performers
Originally created in order to expose new audiences
to classical music
Different “Performers”

What is the link?
“Performers” connect to music in a different way
An auditory utopia is achieved by the listeners’
transportation into the world of music
Kuns’ Strangers Among Sounds
Music helps to facilitate connections between
ideas, traditions, and identity within a social
process of reimagining
Henriques’ Mariachi Reimaginings
SO!
Buzzbrews helps to reimagine classical music.
