Mother Teresa was born in 1910 in Skopje, Yugoslavia and decided at age 12 to join religious life. She became a nun at age 18 and took her vows at age 21, adopting the name Teresa. In 1950, she received permission from the Vatican to start the Missionaries of Charity in Calcutta, India to care for the poor and needy. Over time, her order grew from 13 nuns to over 4,000 nuns who operated homes for people dying, children, and lepers.
