We had the opportunity to interview Karmali about his
career journey and the insights he has learned along the

Tell us about yourself and your professional journey so
far.
I am a portfolio manager, author, media personality,
business and market expert for 770 CHQR and CTV
Morning Live, and an entrepreneur.
Growing up, my father owned his own auto body business,
and I was interested in entrepreneurship even before I knew
what that word meant. At 16 years old, I had a summer job
working for a financial advisor, and something clicked. I
knew I wanted to spend my career making a positive impact
on people's lives by helping them improve their financial
security.
After many years of education and experience in the wealth
management industry, my business partner and I started the
Popowich Karmali Advisory Group with the purpose of
helping people plan for the most vulnerable stage of their
life: retirement. We are now one of the most well-regarded
investment teams in Canada.
Together, we have written a book entitled Bulletproof Your
Retirement, hosted the More than Money radio show where
we discuss a variety of financial and lifestyle topics, and
helped hundreds of clients have a fulfilling and financially
stable retirement.
I started the Karmali Exchange to use what I've learned
from decades of studying successful companies from an
investment standpoint to help entrepreneurs take their own
businesses to the next level.
What was your inspiration to venture into the business
talk show hosting profession?
I saw a gap that needed to be filled: business owners didn't
have a voice in my city. I decided to use my platform to
promote and encourage local businesses. In speaking to
entrepreneurs, I recognized that many are good at their craft
- they make a great product, or they provide a unique
service - but very few are actually good at running a
business.

Tell us more about More Than Money and The Karmali
Exchange and what makes these programs unique.
More than Money is a radio show that, as the name implies,
is about more than finances. My business partner and I
wanted to share what we have learned through our years in
the wealth management industry to empower our audience
to make wise decisions in retirement. But we also realize
that retirement is about more than just money. It's about the
lifestyle you want to lead and how you want to spend your
time. On our show, we discuss everything from financial
topics like inflation and tax to lifestyle topics such as travel
and hobbies.
The Karmali Exchange is a monthly web show and podcast
featuring successful entrepreneurs telling their stories about
how they made their businesses successful and some of the
challenges they have faced along the way. They share
valuable advice that can help other business owners grow
their own companies.
Brief us about the seminars and webinars that you host.
What are all the benefits people can gain from joining
them?
Entrepreneurship can be a lonely endeavor. My live and
virtual events are designed to create a community of
business owners who are not in competition with each
other, but who genuinely want to help each other. These
events are a forum to share ideas, advice, and insights.
Attendees get access to some of the most successful people

they're experiencing and can give them tips and strategies to
overcome obstacles and grow their own businesses.

As a portfolio manager, I understand how to analyze and

have experience in overcoming these obstacles. This makes
me uniquely qualified to evaluate the strengths and
weaknesses of companies and give business owners the
tools they need to be successful.
How are modern technology solutions and digital media
enabling you to enhance your business operations and
services?
My business started off locally, but technology has allowed
me to expand my reach beyond my city and even my
country to connect with people from different nations,
industries, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
I use a combination of conventional media and social media
to engage with my audience. Everyone learns in a different
way, and technology allows them to access my content,
however, whenever and wherever is convenient for them.
What were the major challenges in your career, and how
have they helped you to become an influential leader?
What are the challenges you still face to this day?
I am a first-generation Canadian, and growing up as a
visible minority was difficult. As a child, I was very fearful
of the racism my family was experiencing, of being the
only person of color in my classroom, and of not fitting in. I
got into hockey when I was younger, not because I knew
anything about the sport or even how to skate, but because I
wanted to be part of a team. That feeling has driven my
passion for creating a community for entrepreneurs, a safe
space where they can ask questions and learn from like-
minded people.
Today, there is so much information readily available that
it's challenging for individuals to determine what is the
news and what is just noise. This has inspired me to curate
information that will be useful to the business community
and bring it home to my platforms.
As an experienced host, what advice would you like to
give to aspiring entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who wish
to venture into the business show hosting space?
I would ask anyone aspiring to be a business show host,
"What is your purpose?" If you are getting into this space
just for the followers, the views, or the money, you will
most likely fail. But if you build your platform with a
purpose and a genuine desire to help people succeed, the
rest will follow.
My advice to entrepreneurs would be to go into business
ownership with eyes wide open. It can seem like hell.
Owning a business is not just a job; it's not 9 to 5. There is
no such thing as a work-life balance. You have to work
longer and harder than anyone else. But when your passion
becomes a viable business, it's all worth it.
In my career as a portfolio manager, I've had the
opportunity to meet with a lot of executives and learn how
they run their corporations, and through these
conversations, I've come to realize that there are five
ingredients to a successful business. I call them the 5 Ps:
People, Product, Process, Passion, and get Paid. If
entrepreneurs can master these five things, their businesses
will succeed.
Where do you see yourself in the future? Also, how do
you envision scaling your professional opportunities and
outreach in the coming years?
In 2020, my business partner and I sat down to set goals for
our practice. We decided that we wanted to reach, impact,
and make a difference in the lives of one million people
worldwide. This may sound like an outrageous goal! But
through platforms like our More than Money radio show
and The Karmali Exchange, I believe it's achievable.
If I can leave a legacy of giving entrepreneurs the tools and
advice they need to succeed, as well as helping retirees not
only survive but thrive in this chapter of their lives, I know
I have done my job.

look ahead of the curve is Kimberly Simon. She is a global
leader in cybersecurity compliance and a huge technology
innovation champion. She combines her excellent ability to
build relationships with her extensive knowledge and
experience in Cybersecurity, Marketing and Sales -
Kimberly transforms how leaders and individuals relate to

Kindly brief our readers about yourself and your
professional journey so far.
I was born in Harare, Zimbabwe, and grew up in a big
family surrounded by my mother, her siblings, and their
children. At 11, l moved to London, England, and
completed high school and college. I got my bachelor’s
Degree at 22 and couldn’t wait to explore the world. I
presented well, and l had the gift of building relationships. I
am also a “Tasker or activator” by nature, so once I decide,
I move very quickly.
I had decided l wanted to work in Marketing and Events,
and l was lucky enough to secure a position in an Events &
Marketing role for a cybersecurity compliance firm. The
field was exciting, the industry was fast-paced, and most
importantly, there were opportunities for me to travel.
My first business trip took me to Dubai, UAE, where l felt
at home in the emerging economy. I took a leap of faith and
migrated there for two years. After that, l searched for more
adventure and different lessons. Life took me to Washington
DC, USA, where l stayed for six months exploring and
learning about business and building professional
relationships in North America (which is very different
from Europe or The Middle East) before moving back to
England.
In London, l reached out to a contact l had made in Dubai
and secured an interview (and later a position) with

industry is ever-evolving, exci ng, and

22. ControlCase. At the time (June 2013), l was the only one in
the Marketing & Events Department. I relished being busy,
meeting new people, the travel, the opportunities (and
sometimes even the challenges), and, of course, the growth
of cybersecurity discussions around the globe. I had finally
found my place; l was in an Events & Marketing role for a
Cybersecurity Compliance company and traveling the
world. I didn’t want to be anywhere else.
Fast forward to today - nine years later, l am still happy at
ControlCase. I was fortunate enough to be part of the team
that opened the company’s Toronto, Canada office. The
assignment was supposed to be just for a year, but I fell in
love with Toronto, the place l now call home. The company
had grown from less than 50 people when l joined; to a
team of over 300 experts today. It has been a blessing to
grow with ControlCase.
Please tell us about your company its mission, and its
vision. What role did you play in furthering its
development and outreach?
ControlCase is a global provider of cybersecurity
certification and continuous compliance services. The
company’s mission has always been to make cybersecurity
compliance easy. We deliver the most efficient and effective
IT Security compliance services worldwide through
automation, process innovation, and our global workforce.
My role started in the marketing arm and has morphed into
much more. I built a lot of our content over the years and
worked with the team to find innovative ways to
communicate our value proposition and grow the company.
About three years in (when that itch for new knowledge and
a fresh challenge came about), we added Sales and Strategic
Partnerships to my role, making me an all-rounder. I have
generated extensive expertise and experience in building
solutions, effectively communicating value, nurturing
relationships, and closing millions of dollars in revenue.
Today, I am one of ControlCase’s top new business revenue
generators. I am proud to say that I have been a part of the
company’s growth for over nine years, and I am still
enjoying the ride.
What was your inspiration to step into the industry that
you are now serving?
After college, I had no idea what industry I would end up
in; but I knew it had to be exciting, fast-paced, relevant,
profitable, and require that I build relationships to succeed.
A good bonus would be the opportunity to travel.
My early career in London was mostly with non-profit
organizations. While I found my work with non-profits
challenging and fulfilling, I came alive when I took my first
corporate job.
While I had not planned to end up in Cybersecurity
Compliance, I had to learn the industry to secure my place
and grow. It turned out to be the best place for me. I was
inspired to stay in the industry because it ticked all the
boxes I had dreamt of after college. I was blessed to report
to the Founder of ControlCase when I first joined – he’s a
true leader committed to sharing knowledge and seeing us
all grow. I learned about the industry, the challenges people
face, the solutions they must choose from, and what drives

23. success. I am motivated because the industry is ever-
evolving, exciting and full of opportunities.
Please tell us about the products, services and solutions
offered by your company. And how do they stand out in
the industry?
ControlCase helps companies strengthen their security
programs by offering cybersecurity assessments to industry
standards that protect data, including PCI DSS, SOC 2, ISO
27001, NIST, and HITRUST. Our competitors typically
offer only a subset of the portfolio of cybersecurity
frameworks we cover, lack the technology to automate
evidence collection for audits, lack the innovation that
allows us to perform one audit and certify to multiple
standards, and lack the global expertise that comes from our
incredibly diverse team across the globe.
Tell our readers about the major challenges in your
career. and how they aided you in developing your
leadership skills.
The major challenges in my career have been around my
identity. Being an immigrant, being black, being a woman,
being young, and coming from a family with no corporate
contacts that I could leverage. All these things that make up
who I am sometimes mean that I am overlooked for
opportunities, ignored, and often underestimated. These
things have also made me the strong leader I am today.
I start with myself – I’m constantly evaluating the
conversations I have with myself and managing my
imposter syndrome. I must believe in myself and my team
and speak up when necessary. Then I extend to others - I
have matured in my ability to build the right network and
find mentors and champions that inspire my growth; that
takes strength, resilience, patience, and faith. Finally, my
challenges have aided me in developing the unique ability
to understand things from different perspectives and use
relationships to get people moving in the same direction.
As an experienced leader, what advice would you like to
give to aspiring entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who wish
to venture into the industry that you are in?
The best advice I can share is:
Be coachable and resilient. There is always something
new to learn, and you must be willing to follow through,
honor your word and do the work.
Work on your confidence. You have no say in where you
came from, but you’re in charge of where you’re going. My
friend Chenai Kadungure always says “Other people can
reject you, but don’t ever reject yourself.” Have faith and
take the chance - all you have to do is take the first step, the
one after that, and after that.
Build a network of the right people. We all know ships
sink because of the water that gets into them. A
conversation can change your entire mood, day, direction,
and life. Be a person who uplifts others so that you can
attract those types of people for yourself.
Leave breadcrumbs for others to follow. Remember those
starting as you walk your journey. Share your story,
opportunities, vision, and challenges; you never know who
is listening and what can happen.
Where do you see yourself in the future?
I’m blessed to have a good position with a great company
where I feel valued and encouraged to learn. I am supported
to grow my expertise and personal brand. As such, I have a
speaking and authorship practice that weaves into what the
company is trying to achieve so that we benefit from
aligned goals, which keeps me motivated. For the future, I
intend to keep the momentum for my personal growth and
focus on global impact – keep learning, keep speaking,
keep writing, and of course, keep growing my network of
the right people.

I have just completed my book titled “Case for
Investing in Cybersecurity Compliance.” It is an
excellent introduction to Cybersecurity Compliance. It
provides the history of compliance, introduces the
reader to cybersecurity frameworks, and discusses the
challenges and benefits of adopting compliance. The
book essentially informs leaders on the benefits of
investing in cybersecurity compliance. However, the
book also prepares readers for a thriving Compliance
Marketing, Sales, or Project Management position.

Finding and Resolving Customer's Major Problems
One possible way to outperform your competitors is to
address the needs of your shared target audience better than
they can. Ask open-ended questions to determine what your
customers want precisely while using your products or
services.
Specific questions that identify customer pain points may be
convenient to ask. These are some of the questions:
• What is the most significant impediment to your
company's growth?
• What is your most important personal challenge?
• Which tasks take up the majority of your time?
• What are your grievances?
• What could be the cause of any recent business or
customer losses?
Once you've determined who at their company can solve
those pain points and who is authorized to purchase your
products and services, you can move on to the next step.
Focusing your efforts on solutions to your customers'
problems rather than simply trying to sell them your
products or services is critical. Take as much time as you
need to identify and solve your customers' pain points,
whether that means several phone calls or weeks or months
of emails and follow-ups.
Use Storytelling and Specialization in the Market
It's tempting to dream about what life would be like if you
had no competition. You get closer to your ultimate goal
when you create a niche. It is because crowded marketing
has far less room for growth. You must have a distinct
selling proposition to compete in a crowded market. The
less competition there is, the more exceptional it is.
By creatively crafting stories around your products,
storytelling is an excellent way to build your niche. Using
accounts, you can become a part of your prospect's lifestyle
rather than a stand-alone product or service.
Particular specialization results in a scalable and profitable
business. A niche market is trustworthy, and the prospects
are easier to reach. Furthermore, the customer retention rate
is high.
Creating a niche through storytelling and specialization can
take time. Take several weeks to develop your story, then
turn it into content such as blog posts and email marketing
campaigns regularly.
Set Competitive Pricing
One of the simplest ways to outperform competitors is to
offer lower prices. To determine the ideal price point, you
must first understand how much your competitors' goods or
services cost. Evaluate which competitors provide the best
value. Then you must decide whether what you offer adds
more value to the table and, as a result, should be priced
higher.
This strategy overrules product costs and consumer
demand. Instead, you concentrate on the current market rate
for your goods or services. You then set your price to be
within the range of prices offered by your competitors.
Surveying your competitors' prices may only take a few

Lowering your prices isn't always the best pricing strategy.
Because the market is divided into the lower, middle, and
upper-tiered customers, you must determine which group is

Providing excellent and memorable customer service is a
perfect way to build customer loyalty and distinguish
yourself from the competition.
The staff should greet customers with pleasant smiles and
express gratitude to those with whom they interact.
Instilling teamwork in your employees and hiring team
players is critical. Reward team members because
employees require constant motivation to outperform
others.
Your customer service representatives should always be
courteous and respectful. They must always be available to

Kindly brief our readers about yourself and your
professional journey so far.
My name is Missy MacKintosh. I am the Founder/CEO of
Canada’s Most Revolutionary Clean Beauty Brand –
MisMacK Clean Cosmetics. I have been a professional
Makeup Artist for over 16 years. I studied at Blanche
McDonald and Make Up Ever Academy in Paris for
airbrushing and worked in management for companies such

I put it into the back of my head as a dream that would
never aspire to anything, but I knew I wanted to be in the
makeup industry.
Fast forward to a few years later, and I was in Dallas at a
Mary Kay retreat, where I met someone from Vancouver.
She told me she was going to school to become a Makeup
Artist (insert hair flip). I was like, “Shut Up! You can do
that!” This was way before YouTube/Facebook/social
media. I had never heard of this as a career. As soon as I got

What was your inspiration to step into the industry that
you are now serving?
I have been obsessed with Make-up since I was three years
old. The funny thing was that there was not a stitch of
makeup in my house growing up except for one lip tint that
my mom wore. You would always find me playing in my
friend’s mom’s makeup bag, playing pretend photoshoots in
my backyard.
When I was 14 years old, my mom joined Mary Kay. I
thought I had died and gone to heaven. I was her right-hand
woman for 4 years until I turned 18 and was able to sign up
myself. My mom took me to all the Conventions in
Toronto, and I remember sitting there thinking, “Man, I do
not want to just work for Mary Kay; I want to BE Mary

Makeup is a very vulnerable thing to talk about, especially

themselves by providing a safe, inclusive, educational, non-
judgmental atmosphere along with safe products that are

How do you think advanced technology will enhance the
operations of your industry in the near future? And how
is your company preparing for that change?
There’s technology now that you can virtually try on
lipstick from your phone. However, I believe you can never
replace in-person human connection or the feel of a
product, for that matter. That connection builds the trust of
a brand.
Look at movies; for instance, CGI (computer-generated
imaging) came in and replaced SFX (special effects
makeup) artist for a bit. Now seeing shows going back to
traditional SFX artistry, you can feel the magic behind it. It
brings out the character far better than a computer-
generated image.
There’s magic in real life, human connection. It builds
confidence and trust in many ways. I love that technology
thus far has opened the world to us by being able to offer
virtual human connection through our online Zoom Lessons
and Zoom Consultations. I look forward to modern
technology to come that builds further connections.

business or entrepreneurship. I had to figure every aspect
out, from package sourcing to design to formulating, then
launching, shipping, selling, and growing.
It forced me to figure it out and never give up. When you
are doing something you have never done before, every step
is a challenge. Each micro and major step has developed
my solution skills which I can now lead my team.
As an experienced leader, what advice would you like to
give to aspiring entrepreneurs and enthusiasts who wish
to venture into the industry that you are in?
Being a full-time makeup artist is a hard journey, let alone
building a brand from the ground up. Do not just quit your
day job. Side hustle and slowly cut back your full-time job
until you can go full-time.
It took me 6 years to get to that place, plus another 5 years
to get to where MisMacK is currently. Rome was not built
in a day. It takes drive, determination, and failure. You must
fail into your flow as an entrepreneur. If you are not failing,
you are not growing.
Where do you see yourself in the future? Also, how do
you envision scaling your company’s operations and
outreach in the coming years?
I plan to franchise our MisMacK stores and have them
across Canada. Then work out way into the US and Europe.
I love that this will be given the opportunity to other
entrepreneurs the opportunity to build something that they
love and are enthusiastic about making other people feel
amazing from the inside out.

Jeff Bezos: Amazon
Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon. Previously known as a
company with little-known online bookselling company

and later break the chain.
However, Amazon’s stock boosted by around 5000 percent
between 1994 to 1997, and later it took a transformational
format in creating an eReader market by introducing
Kindles.
Bezos thought of changing the way, and here we are,
