Prevalence of Diabetes in Columbus Georgia
At first glance, Columbus, Georgia, looks like one of the most beautiful cities in America. The city is blessed with amazing parks and trails, with the scenes made even more beautiful by the Chattahoochee River and its riverwalk. The city also has a lot of history, displayed in various sites such as the Columbus Museum. The region also has a diverse population, with an African American majority, followed closely by a Caucasian population. There are also other races living in the region, showing how diverse the community is.
However, under all this beauty lies a concerning statistic hurting many regional residents. There has been a rise in the number of cases of diabetes in the region, with some areas, such as Wynnton, having an estimated 24.6% of its residents diagnosed with diabetes (Huang et al., 2022). This rate places Wynnton at the 99th percentile for national prevalence. However, the most disturbing fact about this is that neighborhoods around Wynnton have significantly lower numbers of diabetes diagnoses, registering only 8% of reported diabetes cases. While this is still relatively high, it is nearly a third of the residents of Wynnton present.
Identifying the Target Population
To properly understand diabetes in Columbus, it is essential to understand the population breakdown in the area. Using Wyntonn as the sample, due to their large population afflicted by diabetes, the target population can be found by analyzing those affected by diabetes in Wynnton as a representation of Columbus. The population in Columbus is estimated to be 210 295 as of 2022, with 46.46% of the individuals in the region being African American, 42.47% being white, and other races closing the population (Huang et al., 2022). In Wynton, the population is generally black, with 64.1% of the residents in the region being African American, with Whites making up 27.4% of the population. Figure 1 presents the graphical representation of Wynnton residents in 2019 (City Data, 2022). The difference in racial makeup between Wynnton and the rest of Columbus and the high prevalence of diabetes shows that the target population for those affected by diabetes is primarily African American.

The median household income in Wynnton is also significantly lower than in the rest of Columbus. While the median household income in Georgia is $61,980, the median household income in Wynnton is $39,628 (City Data, 2022). This shows that compared to other residents in Columbus, most of the population in Columbus is relatively poor. This presents another aspect of the target population. The population most affected by diabetes, using the residents of Wynnton as the sample, are likely to have a low median household income and to be African American.

Demographic analysis, the statistical description of human populations, is a tool used by government agencies, political parties, and manufacturers of consumer goods. Polls conducted on every topic imaginable, from age to toothpaste preference, give the government and corporations an idea of who the public is and what it needs and wants.
Latino degree-attainment

from place to place, why some cities get so large, and why small towns
sometimes die. It will also look at the effects on the physical environ-
ment of population change and our way of life.
Demography: The Study
of Population
When humans first began to cultivate plants some 12,000 years ago,
Earth’s entire Homo sapiens population was about 5 million, or about
the number of people living in Colorado today. Very slow growth
pushed the total in 1 C.E. to perhaps 300 million, or about the popu-
lation of the United States today.
Starting around 1750, world population began to spike upward.
We are currently adding nearly 83 million people to the planet each
year; the world now holds 6.8 billion people.
The causes and consequences of this drama are the focus of
demography, the study of human population. Demography (from the
Greek, meaning “description of people”) is a cousin of sociology that
analyzes the size and composition of a population and studies how
and why people move from place to place. Demographers not only
collect statistics but also raise important questions about the effects
of population growth and suggest how it might be controlled. The
following sections present basic demographic concepts.
Fertility
The study of human population begins with how many people are
born. Fertility is the incidence of childbearing in a country’s population.
During a woman’s childbearing years, from the onset of menstruation
(typically in the early teens) to menopause (usually in the late for-
ties), she is capable of bearing more than twenty children. But
fecundity, or maximum possible childbearing, is sharply reduced by
cultural norms, finances, and personal choice.
Demographers describe fertility using the crude birth rate, the
number of live births in a given year for every 1,000 people in a popu-
lation. To calculate a crude birth rate, divide the number of live births
in a year by the total population and multiply the result by 1,000. In
the United States in 2008, there were 4.25 million live births in a pop-
ulation of 304 million, yielding a crude birth rate of 14.0 (Hamil-
ton, Martin, & Ventura, 2010).

Here are a few key ways that demographic characteristics can influence the provision of healthcare services:
1. Age - The age distribution of a population impacts the types of healthcare services needed. Younger populations require more maternal and pediatric care, while older populations need more geriatric and chronic disease management services. Healthcare systems must be equipped to meet the specific needs of different age groups.
2. Gender - Men and women often have different health risks and needs. For example, women require gynecological and reproductive services. Healthcare services and education programs need to consider gender-specific needs.
3. Location - Rural and urban populations face different healthcare access challenges. Rural areas tend to be medically underserved with physician and facility shortages.

It appears to be that the county with the highest population of people age 18 and under is also the population that struggles the most with obesity. Another analysis that can be made is that the counties further from the center of Florida (such as counties close to the shore) have a smaller obesity rate. Finally one can also conclude that children may be a significant part of the population that faces obesity because in the majority of counties at least 18.4- 21.8% of the population are under age 18.
