James Monroe was the 5th President of the United States from 1817-1825. Some key facts about his presidency include that he issued the Monroe Doctrine in 1823 which stated that further efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North and South America would be viewed as acts of aggression. He also presided over an era of good feelings with little political conflict between parties. Several new states joined the union under his presidency including Mississippi, Illinois, Alabama, Maine, and Missouri.
