Four teenage girls plan to play a game of Monopoly, using each other as the game pieces. However, when they start playing, one of the girls mysteriously disappears after her piece is moved on the game board. She contacts the others, finding herself transported to the real location on the board. The same thing keeps happening to the other girls as the game progresses, transporting them into the Monopoly world. The film follows the girls both in the real world as they play the game, and in the game world as they are controlled by the board and have to follow its rules.

This is a propsal which myself and my other group members created using powerpoint.
The propsal tells you in detail about our thriller opening we are going to make.
In our proposal we have explained the details rejected and why, we have explained our inspirations and the themes of our thriller opening.
We have also explained and gone in to detail about the possible music we are thinking to create as we are creating our own music and what kind of music/opening music inspires us. We have also explained the casting ad thriller conventipns and explained our final idea for our thriller opening.
This is a commercial treatment I wrote for three :30 second television spots for Hungryman in Los Angeles. I have removed the director's name and added mine for privacy.
2. 'MONOPOLIZE' - TITLE
•OUR REASON FOR CHOOSING TO NAME THE FILM 'MONOPOLIZE' IS BECAUSE IT IS BASED
AROUND THE GAME MONOPOLY AND THE WORD 'MONOPOLIZE' MEANS 'TO CONTROL' WHICH
IS WHAT THE GAME PLAYERS WILL BE DOING - CONTROLLING THE PEOPLE (COUNTERS)
WITHIN THE GAME
'MONOPOLIZE' - HAVE AND CONTROL FULLY AND EXCLUSIVELY; "HE
MONOPOLIZES THE LASER PRINTER."
- CONTROL, COMMAND - EXERCISE AUTHORITATIVE CONTROL OR
POWER OVER.
3. QUICK DESCRIPTION OF STORYLINE
•4 GIRLS ARE AT HOME ABOUT TO PLAY MONOPOLY
•THEY EACH NEED A COUNTER TO PLAY WITH (THIS COUNTER WILL BE A REAL PERSON AND
NOT JUST A PLASTIC COUNTER) - {PEOPLE IN THE GAME}
•FROM THE 4 PEOPLE (COUNTERS), 1 GIRL GOES MISSING DUE TO HER PLAYER GOING FIRST
IN THE GAME AND MOVING THE COUNTER WHICH IN TURN MOVES HER IN REAL LIFE.
•SHE IS IN OXFORD CIRCUS WHICH IS WHERE THE COUNTER IS PLACED ON THE MONOPOLY
BOARD AND RINGS THE OTHER GIRLS TO TELL THEM.
•THIS HAPPENS REPEATEDLY TO THE GIRLS (COUNTERS) AND THE GIRLS PLAYING THE GAME
ARE OBLIVIOUS TO WHAT IS GOING ON IN THIS OTHER WORLD.
4. •THE 'BANKER' COMES UP TO THE 1ST GIRL WHO WENT MISSING AND ASKS HER FOR
£200 TAX (MONOPOLY MONEY)
•WE KEEP SWITCHING BETWEEN REAL LIFE AND THE GAME TO SHOW THE LINK
•FINALLY, ONE OF THE PLAYERS GETS SENT TO JAIL IN THE GAME AND THIS HAPPENS
TO THE COUNTER (GIRL). THE GAME ENDS AND THE MONOPOLY BOARD IS SHUT AND
PUT AWAY LEAVING THE GIRLS (COUNTERS INSIDE THE GAME)
•THE NEXT DAY, THE 4 GIRLS COME AND OPEN THE MONOPOLY BOARD AND THE
AUDIENCE GET THE SENSE THAT THIS CYCLE IS ABOUT TO HAPPEN AGAIN TO THE
GIRLS INSIDE THE GAME.. THE QUESTION REMAINS.. WILL THEY EVER GET OUT?
5. RATIONALE
• WHY OUR IDEA IS GOOD? WE CHOSE THIS IDEA BECAUSE WE BELIEVE IT IS SOMETHING
THAT WILLAPPEAL TO AN AUDIENCE THAT IS ALREADY OUT THERE – LEADING TO A
SUCCESSFUL FILM WITH MANY VIEWS. IT IS ALSO A FUN AND CREATIVE IDEA WHICH IS
SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT THAN ANYTHING SEEN BEFORE WHICH WILLALSO ATTRACT AN
AUDIENE.
• WHY OUR FILM WOULD BE A SUCCESS? IN OUR RESEARCH WE FOUND FILMS LIKE
‘CORALINE’ AND ‘ZATHURA’ WHICH WE BELIEVE WOULD BE SIMILAR TO OUR FILM ALONG
MEANING A SIMILAR TARGET AUDIENCE AND BECAUSE THESE FILMS WERE VERY
SUCCESSFUL, IT IS VERY LIKELY OUR FILM WOULD BE TOO.
• WE THOUGHT MONOPOLY WOULD BE THE BEST GAME TO USE AS IT IS VERY WELL KNOWN
AROUND THE WORLD THEREFORE WE WOULD BE REACHING OUT TO A GREATER AUDIENCE
AND WOULD ALLOW THE AUDIENCE TO UNDERSTAND THE RULES OF THE GAME BETTER AS
THEY WOULD BE FAMILIAR WITH IT.
6. LOGLINE
•4 TEENAGE GIRLS FIND THEMSELVES TRAPPED IN
ANOTHER WORLD IN WHICH THEY ARE CONTROLLED, WILL
THEY EVER ESCAPE THE BOARD?...
7. CHARACTERS
•4 MAIN TEENAGE GIRLS (WHO WILL PLAY THE REAL
LIFE COUNTERS)
•4 TEENAGE GIRLS WHO WILL BE PLAYING THE REAL
LIFE MONOPOLY GAME
•BANKER

10. LOCATIONS
Where of the girls in the
game finds herself.
Where another girl inside
the game is taken to
The house in which the
game of monopoly is
played at.
11. EQUIPMENT & PROPS•OUR EQUIPMENT FOR FILMING WILL BE PROVIDED BY
THE SCHOOL (CAMERA AND TRIPOD).
•OUR EQUIPMENT FOR EDITING WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED
BY THE SCHOOL (FINAL CUT PRO)
•WE WILL BE NEEDING A MONOPOLY GAME BOARD
WHICH WE HAVE OURSELVES AT HOME AS WELL AS
MOBILE PHONES AND MONOPOLY MONEY.
•WE WILL BE MAKING MINIATURE FIGURES TO BE THE
COUNTERS (PEOPLE)
13. AUDIO IDEAS •WE WILL NOT BE HAVING A SOUND TRACK FOR OUR
SHORT FILM AS WE THINK THAT IT DOESN’T HELP BRING
OUR IDEA TO LIFE AND WILL DISTRACT FROM THE
FANTASY ELEMENT RUNNING THROUGH OUR FILM.
We will be making lots of different
sound effects such as;
We will use just sound in the
opening shots, there will be a black
screen and the muffled voices of
the ‘counters’ in the game, then
there will be loud footsteps and
louder voices of the people in the
normal world who are going to play
the game. This sets the scene as in
the next shot we will realise who is
who and what the film plot is going
to be about.
We will emphasise the sounds of the dice being
rolled. We will do this by recording the sound of
a double decker coming past, this will then run
into the next scene as a bus runs past the girls in
the game to reveal them and represent the
different worlds. The sound of the dice will be a
motif that we will use to tell the audience that
they are now watching what is happening in the
game.
The counters that the girls
are using, will land loudly on
the board as they are moved
on the actual board, this
emphasises the movement
and signifies to the
audience that the girls in the
game will move to where the
counters have moved.
14. •THE MUSIC FOR MONOPOLIZE WILL BE USED AT MOMENTS WHEN
THERE IS TENSION OR A TWIST IN THE PLOT.
For example when one of the girls in the
game is locked in prison and the game is
about to close there is tension building
music to reflect this to the audience, they
will feel nervous for the characters
because they will feel slightly more
attached to them so will sit on the edge of
their seats.
Also when the banker walks up to the counter girl asking for the
tax she owes, the music will be tense as her face grows
confused
15. EDITING IDEAS
Lighting– for the lighting in the film we could make
it so the people playing the game are in darkness and
the people in the game are filmed when it’s light. This
would make it clear to the audience that there are two
different worlds.
Camera movement – To emphasise the
difference between the people playing and the people
in the game. The camera could be handheld in during
the people playing the game to give off a sense of
realism. We could also have it so only the hands of the
people playing the game are shown and not their faces
which would make them less important, making the
players IN the game the main focus.
Editing – When the girls are playing the game
these shots could be longer and slow motion to show
that they’re in a different world to the girls trapped in
the game. The footage of the girls being controlled
should be fast paced and quick to show the adventure
side of the short.
Setting – The setting between the two ‘worlds’
will evidently be different as when shown the house,
we will associate this with the girls playing the
game whereas when shown clips outside and in
public places we’ll know that this is the world inside
of the game.
