Hi my name is Arnoud Schoofs, a 32 year old designer. And co-founder of an Antwerp based design agency called bump. Bump is a place where design and technology meet. We strongly believe in a future where there will be a great demand for desinging mixed reality environments. But as much as i would like to talk about our projects, today Monkeyshot asked me talk about a more difficult matter:

So there’s a lot of confusion on the topic. And the previous defintions touch some of the aspects of our daily office life., they still forgot the most important elements.
Because design is about two things : a purpose/intention or motive and performance.
To do what’s necessary, do you really need that app?
To do whats true, is your company ready for transformation?
To do what’s right, are you ready to match your brand indentities?
Simple questions and they haven’t changed for many decades. But is a lot of homework and preperation. There aren’t really bad answers to these questions but it’s important to tell the truth when you answer them to us. We don’t design for the purpose of designing new stuff, we design for the motive of the project.
It’s like talking, do we talk for the sake of talking? No, we talk because we have something to say.
Performance is about the execution of it. It is in the performance that we see the design of it, the art of it. We see what materials have been used and combined, we see how technology interacts, we see the methods which have been folowed in bringing it into completion. We see the performance in the correlation of the parts , and the appropriatness to its motive or purpose.
So remember design is about a purpose/intention or motive and performance.

Communicating a concept design to a firm
Good design will communicate the value of a business idea or the brand identities to the clients or consumers.
Good designers must certainly think about materials, functionality and aesthetics, but you must also undersatnd a customers thought process and emotions in order to communicate with them and establish a dialogue.
Hello Bank wanted to communicate closer with their target audience, that was the intention. We ended up building pop up stores all over the country that provide latest technologies, offered free workshops and food.
The whole communication process was also tailored for the target audience, the launch with an online game, premiere opening only for bloggers, no bankers inside only hospitality.
Design thinking is open minded, multi disciplinary way of thinking.

And as logic as the first scheme was, this is how the process really is.
First we research towards the motive and than we slowly progress to the performance part.
But it’s only with a good motive that the path to inovation runs smoothly. Good intention makes hard choices easier.

Branding was adapted, HR profiles were changed, union agreed to different way of working, we got a seperate IT system, and created a new way of banking with a worldwide unique product.

So if you have a CEO that supports design, as a designer you must also be prepared to understand business.
Because obviuously, business is one of the ingredients of your motive.
For this client we co created the small business plan for the exhbition stand.
We discussed on how much revenu increase they might expect for attending the exhibition.
And that’s how we counted back towards the final budget for the stand.
We didn’t just multiply the m2 by the average cost per m2.
So we ended with half of a normal budget, but the performance was really well.
