Model Matter
Science book pages( 16 to 22 )
Explain that matter is made of tiny
particles too small to be seen.
In this Lesson You will
Atom
Element
Molecule
Compound
Atomic Theory
Lesson Vocabulary
When you grind salt, you divide chunks of salt into
smaller pieces. These small pieces are still salt.
The small grindings have a similar shape to the
larger pieces. They taste the same on your food. You
can crush them again with a spoon to make salt
powder.

The sand castle is made of matter, It
takes up a lot of space. It has a large
mass.
But if you look closely. You will see that
it was made of tiny Sand grains.
A sand grain is also made of matter
But it has a little space and small mass.
All kinds of matter are made of tiny
parts
All matter are made of elements.
An element is made up of only one kind of
atom.
Elements are the simplest substances that
make all kinds of matter.
Atomic theory : is the idea that
everything is made of small particles.
The smallest part of an element that still
has the properties of the element.
All substances are made of atoms.
An atom
Elements are the ingredients that make up
all kinds of matter.

5Some information about atoms
2-Atoms of each element are different from
the atoms of other element.
1-Atoms are too small to be seen with a regular
microscope, but special instruments can show
how atoms are arranged.
Example
Carbon dioxide is a molecule that has
only three atoms.
A Molecule is a group of atoms
bonded or(connected) together.
- it represents the smallest unit of
compound that has the same properties of
that compound
An atom is the part of an element.
A particular element is composed of
only one type of atom.

7Most things around you are Compounds
are matter made of two or more elements.
The atoms of different elements are
joined together in a particular way to
form each compound.
Table salt is a compound that is made
up of the elements sodium and chlorine.
Compounds
Example
A compound is the substance produced
when two or more elements combine in a
chemical reaction.
A compound is always made up of two
or more different types of atom.
Two elements, hydrogen (H) and
oxygen (O), combine to make
the compound, water.
Another Example on Compounds
Making a compound – carbon dioxide
A compound has very different properties to the
elements from which it is made.
Carbon dioxide
A colourless gas
which is used
to put out fires.
Carbon
A black solid
which can be
used as a fuel.
compound
elements
Oxygen
A colourless gas
which is essential
for life.
