• The first recorded instance of X was performed on a
dog in 1823. A short time after, R. Harrison of London
performed it on human, however not with the
intention / purpose it is popular now. The first case
reported in the US was in 1897 by A.J. Ochsner, a
surgeon in Chicago, in a paper titled "Surgical
Treatment of Habitual Criminals". The widespread
usage of X in its modern form gained momentum
during WW 2. It was generally considered illegal in
France until 2001, due to provisions in the Napoleonic
Code forbidding "self-mutilation".
