1. The Fold House
INTRODU
CTION
One of the most
spectacular house
conversions done
by Alison Brook
Architects is
definitely The
Fold House
conversion and
extension of
Victorian family
home in the
Wandsworth
Common, London.
420sm extension
seamlessly flows
into the 200 foot
garden. Extension
is made of a
single thin
planar skin of
brass, which was
‘Cut and
Folded’ to form
this masterpiece.
Glass facades
complement this
area and allows
plenty natural
light to soak in.
2. Sustainable design
Overview
As a civilization we face a challenge how we design
and build our buildings.
We have to consider alternative ways, where new is
part of the existing environment and have positive
interact on it.
We can start from more obvious green Eco walls to more
subtle elements, such us lighting.
In addition, designers need to
consider not only actual end
product, but also consumption
of energy during production,
transport, use and end-of-life
disposal. Green products also
can have a positive effect on
indoor air quality and more.
Choices of material for this
conversion was carefully selected
to follow the idea of 'Green
buildings’.
Featured back wall is cladded by
stone, the most natural original
green building material. This
natural material absorbs the sun’s
heat and radiates it at night.

One of the best ECO collection of
sustainable porcelain tiles offering
100% recycled content was used for
extension floor.
The collection achieved SKA, LEED and
Eco-Label rating. Due to its high
recycled content this material gained
an A+ on the BRE rating system.
ECO under floor heating mat was
installed under the extension
floor. Heating mat is
electrically operated and
suitable for all types of tile
or stone floors.
Having energy efficient elements
in our homes also improving our
environment. Windows used in Fold
House are manufactured from
modern aluminium and PVCU
materials built to last.
The non-toxic materials were used
to achieve a green targets. For
example insulation for this
project comes from converted
waste paper to high performance
cellulose fibre. This type of
insulation offers complete void-
fill and lower air permeability.
Furthermore increased U-Values
and a BREEAM assessed GWP of -
1.5, Warmcel actively reduces a
building’s carbon footprint.
3. Overview
To achieve desired enjoyable
environment, extension and its
interior needs to be designed in order
to coordinate with an age and style od
the existing Victorian building. As
per client requirements main focus is
to create sustainable home with smart
design.
Tyshka Design focused on fact, that
client posses from 200 feet long
garden and proposed design with
alfresco feel, a design, where already
a nutshell is exiting in its own way.
As extension could be entered or exit from main old building on the East
side and also garden could be accessed by sliding doors, Tyshka Design had
to make sure, that main traffic area wouldn’t be blocked by furniture.
Dominant part of extension walls are made of glass and as we would like to
take advantage of the view, main pieces of furniture will be located
alongside back wall.
After developing an ideas, perfect use
for this contemporary space is to
build up a conservatory with several
comfortable armchairs, allowing client
to enjoy the view of the garden.
Minimalistic colour scheme with shades
of grey and hint of striking green
greenery creates calm atmosphere.
4. Development
Back wall of an extension will have on right side installed ECO wall
with some greenery to create a feel of outdoor area. Greenery will be
hold in boxes filled with soil made of wooden pallets. Wooden planks
can be easily re-used in future for different purposes, which make
them a perfect sustainable (recyclable) material.
To congregate and coordinate with Eco wall on left side of the back
wall Tyshka design recommended stylish wall mounted storage from
overstock.com. This organizers are eco-friendly and made of zBoard-
recyclable paper.

Eye catching Eco
divider made of
bamboo is separating
new extension from
existing building.
This very stylish way
of dividing two areas
do not compromise on
light level as sun
rays penetrate in-
between the bamboo
sticks.
Divider works
visually very well
with Eco wall located
in other part of the
room.
The stone façade and its grey
tones create a dramatic feel,
however it still feels earthy.
Interior is designed in
purpose to visually join the
exterior facade making the
house feel like an open
pavilion in conjunction with
the garden.
6. Soft furnishing
BHGF 04
Dark Grey
Natural materials, such us organic
fabrics and fills, ecologically
harvested wood, reclaimed finds,
bamboo or non-toxic finishes being
not only better for the environment,
but also helping to control
humidity, temperature, sound and
allergens.
Sustainable finest
quality rugs chosen
to complete the
look of the
extension are made
from wool – totally
renewable raw
material, which was
naturally
engineered. Company
chosen to supply
this project is
strongly involved
in environmental
improvement.
Dying process
has been
designed to
reduce carbon
foot print as
much as
possible and
company
possess from
complete
control of
emissions and
effluents.
Soft furnishing choices in the
extension area compliments natural
tones of the room carcass.
The Husk Chair from B&B Italia
captures style, comfort and
sustainability. Materials used can
be easily decomposed if necessary.
7. Some accessories were made directly on the
place from the ‘leftover materials’.
This small pouf ECO-project was made from
recyclable plastic bottles filled with paper,
organic fills for softness and upholstered in
old woven sweater.
Plastic bottles become more and more popular
in Green projects.
There is nothing more eco-friendly than
transforming unwanted material into something
beautiful for everyday use, but also ease to
dispose.
Beside the seating elements
in the extension area,
coffee table and side tables
are surely another main
elements in the space.
Tables plays important role
in our lives by adding extra
comfort to it, while a good
design can enhance aesthetic
appearance of the space.
Current innovative and
creative market offers wide
range of coffee tables made
from many different
materials.
Tyshka design came across unique
piece made completely from waste
materials, creating natural and
bold statement in the room.
It is important, that we do not
only create Greener world,
ourselves, but also support
companies, who follow this idea
and care about environment.
Lighting used in this part of the house possess from LED lighting due to its
energy efficiency. Its rated life of 100,000+ translates into cost savings of 40%
or more. LED lighting also uses far less energy to light up the same area as the
older technologies.
This type of lighting has lower ecological impact due to its 3 to 4 times less
Carbone dioxide emissions, that again previous technologies and eared USGBC &
LEED credits.
