Example of an effective vision statement:
Transform communities by inspiring people
throughout the world to open their minds, accept and
include people with intellectual disabilities and
thereby anyone who is perceived as different.

What is a Vision Statement?
“The vision is the aspiration of the organization of what it would like to be in the future”.
Questions to consider in preparing a Vision statement
What are the needs to be addressed?
What are the strengths and weaknesses?
What are the resources available?
What are the priorities?
What would success look like?
Tips for Developing a Vision Statement
Be brief, clear and easily
explained to others.
Provides direction
/Paint a graphic
picture into the
future.
Involve
stakeholders.
Use the present tense,
clear, concise language.
Do not confuse with mission
statement.
Have a plan to
communicate your
vision statement.
Commit time and
resources to the
vision.

Definition of A Mission Statement
Example:
The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and
athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and
adults with intellectual disabilities. This gives them continuing
opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience
joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their
families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

What is a Mission Statement?
“The mission is a realistic goal, indicating what the stakeholders would like the adult

Definition of A Vision Statement Example of an effective vision statement: Transform communities by inspiring people throughout the world to open their minds, accept and include people with intellectual disabilities and thereby anyone who is perceived as different. (Special Olympics: http://www.specialolympics.org/Sections/What_We_Do/Our_Mission.aspx) What is a Vision Statement? “The vision is the aspiration of the organization of what it would like to be in the future”.
  • 7. Questions to consider in preparing a Vision statement What are the needs to be addressed? What are the strengths and weaknesses? What are the resources available? What are the priorities? What would success look like?
  • 8. Tips for Developing a Vision Statement Be brief, clear and easily explained to others. Provides direction /Paint a graphic picture into the future. Involve stakeholders. Definition of A Mission Statement Example: The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. This gives them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community. Involve target groups in developing the mission Use clear, concise language Clear regarding what is to be done and why Inclusive – reflects the voices of all people involved

Not to be confused with the mission statement. Have a plan to communicate your vision statement to other stakeholders. Be prepared to commit time and resources to the vision you establish.
  6. Tips for Developing a Mission Statement A Mission Statement grounds the vision in a more practical way. The mission should describe what the organization will do and why. Mission statements are similar to vision statements; however, they are more specific about action. The mission statement might be referring to the current state of affairs and at the same time addressing questions such as: What needs to be done and for who and how its going to do that? Use clear, concise language Clear regarding what is to be done and why Inclusive – reflects the voices of all people who are involved Involve target groups in developing the mission The mission statement may include: The organization’s purpose The outcomes and services being provided The organization’s future focus
