Fyokla, a 6-year-old beggar girl, was looking for Terenty, a shoe mender and friend of the sacristan Silanty Silitch. Silanty Silitch told Fyokla that Terenty was in the kitchen gardens. Terenty had removed the hand of Fyokla's 8-year-old brother Danilka, which had gotten stuck in a tree hole. Terenty then explained and described to Fyokla the different natural things they had seen that day, as a storm began to darken the surroundings.
