Exploring one’s shadow is no easy undertaking. The idea of getting to know what Jung referred to as, “That which I do not wish to be” is rarely considered an exciting prospect. Yet we implore all leaders to be courageous and get to know and learn to work with their shadow. It is only when we do the work to make the unconscious conscious, that we are able to build true compassion for ourselves and others; freeing us to become the leaders we were born to become.
James Hollis is a Jungian analyst, author and lecturer whose work has inspired and influenced us at Reboot. In this episode Jerry and James talk in depth about the Jungian concept of shadow, how shadow shows up in leadership, and what we can do once we become aware of our shadow.
A workshop I used to give my business students at the University of Florida. They loved it and many have written me years later saying they still use and revise the statement they wrote in class.

2. Is
GaryVee
a Stoic?
He doesn’t appear
to identify as
Stoic,
But he does model
the principles
taught by
Epictetus, Marcus
Aruliaus and
Seneca.
3. Why Would
You want a
Stoic Role
Model?
“There is a need, in my view,
for someone as a standard
against which our characters
can measure themselves.
Without a ruler to do it
against you don’t make
crooked straight.”
Gary Vaynerchuk
5. What is in your control?
Your effort is within your control, the outcome isn't.
“..I work because the
content I’m putting out is
giving, I couldn’t’ care less
about anything that
happens after.”
Gary Vaynerchuk
6. Remember Death
"I sit there, truly,in the shower, on a
flight, when I wake up. Some people
meditate, some people work out to deal
with whatever anxieties or thoughts they
have. I actually sit and truly try to convince
myself that I have lost one of the five most
important people in my life, and that is the
biggest thing I do, that leads to the
biggest happiness I have."
Gary Vaynerchuk
Stoicism encourages us to remember that
life is fleeting andthat we and everyone we
care about will die.
7. Love Fate
“I think losing is awesome 'cause you deserved it,
it means somebody was better than you, and
that's good for you to know 'cause that's real
life. That’s how its gonna be. And I think getting
somebody to say no is awesome ‘cause that’s
real life. It doesn’t mean you suck. It means what
you tried to do right now didn’t work.”
Stoicism invites us to embrace fate. Not in a
fatalistic 'woe is me' kind of way, in a 'this is a
reality, now let's learn from it and ecome a better
person' kind of way.
Gary Vaynerchuk
8. Just Do It!
"First say to yourself what you
would be; then do what you have to
do."
You don’t become an entrepreneur or Stoic by reading and debating, it
takes practice.
Gary Vaynerchuk
9. Empathy
“When you wake up in the
morning, tell yourself: The
people I deal with today will
be meddling, ungrateful,
arrogant, dishonest, jealous,
and surly. They are like this
because they can’t tell good
from evil.”.
Gary reminds us to treat trolls with
compassion as if they have the time
and mentality to watch something they
don’t like and then shoot off a negative
comment, their life clearly sucks.
Marcus Aurelius
10. Wisdom, one of four cardinal virtues, is the
ability to navigate a complicated situation in
the best way possible.
"People judge themselves...
you make the best decision you
could at that moment with the
datathat you had. The end."
Wisdom
Gary Vaynerchuk
11. “I really believe the thing
that's holding people back is
the romantic version for who
they think they want to be, or
who they think they are,
versus who they actually are.”
Courage
Courage for a Stoic is the willingness to face
things the way they are, not the way you want
them to be or fear they might be.
Gary Vaynerchuk
12. Justice
How you make your money
is more important than if you make it.
Stoic Justice is about doing the right thing, to the best of
our ability, in every situation, big and small, for the good
of all.
I only care if I’m doing something
wrong, wrong is different than doing
something that somebody else
doesn’t want you to do.
Gary Vaynerchuk
Gary Vaynerchuk
13. Other People’s
Judgements
“I think people get too high when
they get cheered. I think the reason
people struggle when people shit on
them in comments is because they are
taking other people’s opinions way to
serous.”
Gary Vaynerchuk
14. Bigger Picture
Your effort is within your control, the outcome isn't.
“..I work because the
content I’m putting out is
giving, I couldn’t’ care less
about anything that
