The Fundación Cisneros is launching a new series of e-books on influential Latin American artists to further their goal of championing underrepresented Latin American art. The foundation was started 30 years ago by Gustavo and Patricia Pisneros to share their collection of Latin American modernist works with the world and encourage appreciation for this genre. Their daughter Adriana is now the foundation's president and overseeing new educational initiatives like the e-book series featuring quotes and art from Latin American artists.
How to Eat an Elephant: Processing a Massive Gift Collection With a Streamli...Beth Picknally Camden
In this presentation, we discussed how the University of Pennsylvania Libraries processed an enormous gift collection, under time pressure, using a unique workflow. Challenges included sorting boxes in which rare materials were mixed with items suitable for general collections, while simultaneously culling duplicates and items to go to resale. We showed how setting up a workflow that anticipates some of the most common curatorial decisions, frees bibliographers and curators from having to look at every item to make a decision. We also talked about how template-based cataloging can be used to save time, along with other streamlined processing.

Patricia Phelps de Cisneros: an art patron on a mission.Gustavo Cisneros
The slight, shy woman sitting in front of me has turned 20th-century art history on its head. Such accolades should not be given lightly, but the Venezuela-born collector Patricia Phelps de Cisneros is a patron on a mission: to bring modern and contemporary art from Latin America to new audiences, giving it a place in the 20th-century art canon that has, until now, been dominated by major European and US movements and artists.

INTRODUCTION FEMINISM ANDART IN THE TWENTIETHCENT.docxvrickens
INTRODUCTION:
FEMINISM AND
ART IN THE
TWENTIETH
CENTURY
BY NORMA BROUDE AND MARY D. GARRARD
What is feminist art? In the early 1970s, artists, critics, and his
torians who were part of the feminist movement believed that,
like the women’s movement itself, art made by feminist women
represented a radical new beginning, a Part Two in the history
of Western culture to complement the largely masculine history
that would now become Part One. The goal of feminism, said
early spokeswomen, was to change the nature of art itself, to
transform culture in sweeping and permanent ways by introduc
ing into it the heretofore suppressed perspective of women.1 In
the new world order that would follow —Part Three —there
would be gender balance in art and culture, and “universality”
would represent the experiences and dreams of both females
and males.
Twenty years later, we may smile at so utopian a vision, hav
ing learned that there is no such thing as a singular female
perspective; that not all art by women is feminist, not even all
art made by women who are feminists; having lived to see the
Feminist Art movement of the 1970s contextualized by critics
and historians as just another avant-garde movement followed by
other movements; and finding ourselves in a period that is
chillingly (to feminists) called “postfeminist,” in which self-
defined feminist art continues to be made, but in forms that dif
fer radically from their 1970s predecessors.
How then do we situate the Feminist Art movement on the
broader stage, conceptually and historically? Is it merely another
phase of avant-garde? Or is it not, rather, to borrow a phrase
that has been used to describe the cultural climate of the 1960s,
“one of those deep-seated shifts of sensibility that alter the
whole terrain”?2 The feminist critic Lucy R. Lippard argued
persuasively in 1980 that feminist art was “neither a style nor a
movement,” but instead “a value system, a revolutionary strat
egy, a way of life,” like Dada and Surrealism and other nonstyles
that have “continued to pervade all movements and styles ever
since.”3 What was revolutionary in feminist art, Lippard ex
plained, was not its forms but its content. Feminist artists’
insistence on prioritizing experience and meaning over form
and style was itself a challenge to the modernist valorization of
"progress” and style development: “in endlessly different ways,”
wrote Lippard, “the best women artists have resisted the tread
mill to progress by simply disregarding a history that was not
theirs. Thus the agenda of feminist art could not be subsumed
into that of modernism, and the very appearance of feminist art
as early as 1970 was a distant early warning that modernism,
and its theoretical commitment to formal values alone, was des
tined to become a finite historical stage, in this case to be
replaced by postmodernism.
Feminist art and art history helped to initiate postmodern
ism in America. We owe to ...

Mercado. Grandes Apuestas: Cisneros de cinco estrellas.Gustavo Cisneros

Ever since Ptolemy, humans have described the contours of earth’s lands and seas according to their observations, with each new discovery redrawing the map. Even now, with a multitude of scientific tools that help us describe our world’s geography with great precision, there remain uncharted territories in our understanding of its cultural boundaries and how they are interconnected across borders. With an attitude of adventure, what we find when we look afresh at our suppositions may forever change our mental map of what we thought we knew.

1. Modern Love:
A new series of e-books carries on the
Fundación Cisneros campaign to champion
the under-told story of Latin american art.
Thursday, February 14, 2013
The Wall Street Journal
WHEN A YOUNG VENEZUELAN media scion named Gustavo Cisneros came to Manhattan
from Caracas with his wife, Patricia Phelps de Cisneros, soon after they married in the 1970s,
they found a fast friend in the form of David Rockefeller. The philanthropic banker had met the
couple after founding the Americas Society and the Council of the Americas, and soon invited
them to join the International Council of New York's Museum of Modern Art. It was, as their
daughter Adriana Cisneros de Griffin tells it, an eye-opening experience. "Everybody at MoMA
knew about Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo—that heavy Mexican art," says the 33-year-old.
2. "But my parents always had an affinity toward modernist works in Latin America. They realized
that there were two stories of Latin American art, and only one that was known to the world."
The revelation inspired them to create their own artistic organization, the Colección Patricia
Phelps de Cisneros, to encourage a better understanding and appreciation of Latin American
art.
Thirty years later, the original goals of the foundation have largely been realized. Adriana, who
became the foundation's president in 2009, points out that works by Latin-American artists now
have a home at MoMA, where her mother sits on the board of trustees. And at any time there
are hundreds of works from their collection on loan around the world, including the largest
exhibition of their pieces to date, which opened in January at Madrid's Museo Reina Sofia.
In February, the foundation launched its latest educational endeavor, a brainchild of Adriana's:
a series of six e-books on influential Latin American artists (quotes and selected art from e-
books at right) aimed at students and art fans alike. The Cisneros family's commitment to
sharing its treasures with the rest of the world signals the kind of openness and transparency
that most collectors avoid. But, "we always like to say that we're not the owners of the
collection, we're the custodians of these works of art," says Adriana. "And that's a whole
different ball game."
—Brekke Fletcher
In addition to the Feb. 20 e-book launch of the first six books in the
"Conversaciones/Conversations" series, all forthcoming titles will be published simultaneously
in print and digital editions. For more information about the e-books,
