nonsense words?
STANDARDS:
 Content - CC.1.1.C Demonstrate understanding of spoken words,
syllables and sounds.
 Information Literacy – Standard Four: The information literate student,
individually or as a member of a group, uses information effectively to
accomplish a specific purpose.
 d. Manipulates digital text, images, and data, as needed, transferring
them from their original locations and formats to a new context.
 Technology Literacy – Standard Seventeen: Students will develop an
understanding of and be able to select and use information and
communication technologies.
GRADE LEVEL, SUBJECT,
LENGTH OF LESSON:
This lesson is intended for First Grade
Subject: Phonics/Phonemic
Awareness – Short /o/ Sound
30 - 45 minutes
OUTCOME GOAL FOR THE
STUDENTS:
The students will recognize the sound of short
/o/ in real and nonsense words.
The students will be able to identify and spell
short /o/ words that are real.
The students will be able to identify, create and
spell short /o/ words that are nonsense.
TECHNOLOGY TOOL(S)
NEEDED:
Computer
 (Recommended but not required):
Smartphone, Tablet, or iPad
• QR Reader must be downloaded to mobile
device prior to lesson.
• Group Me App should also be downloaded to
mobile device prior to lesson.
ACTIVITIES:
 Students will be watching videos using smartphone and QR
Readers on the short vowel /o/ sound.
 Students will be reading, identifying, creating and sharing short
/o/ words through the use of the GroupMe app.
 Students will be responding to assessment questions about
short /o/ words using the Poll Everywhere tool.
 Students will practice reading and writing short /o/ real and
nonsense words.
ASSESSMENT:
The students will use either the polling tools in
the Blackboard Collaborate classroom or the
Polling Everywhere App to respond to yes or
no questions on the board. For example: Is
hop a real word? (Students would give a
green check for yes or a red X for no).
CONSIDERATIONS FOR STUDENTS W HO
DO NOT HAVE ACCESS TO THE TOOL(S):
 EVERY student in my cyber class has access to a computer. They should
each be able to complete every activity using the computer if necessary!
 For those who do not have a smartphone or tablet to use a QR reader on
their mobile device for the videos, they can click on the link directly on the
whiteboard to watch the videos using their computer.
 For those who do not have a smartphone or tablet to use the Group Me
texting feature, they can utilize the chat box within the virtual classroom to
communicate and collaborate their made up nonsense words.
 For those who do not have a smartphone or table to use Poll Everywhere for
the assessment, they can use their polling tools within Blackboard Collaborate to
respond to the assessment.
MANAGEMENT OF THE
TECHNOLOGY TOOLS:
 These students are in first grade and cyber school from home. Each
student and their learning coach (parent/guardian) are responsible
for making sure the computers provided are in good working
condition.
 If a student has access to a smartphone or tablet, the learning
coach will be responsible for making sure the student is using it in the
proper manner and at the proper designated times throughout the
lesson.
• Cyber education alleviates the management responsibilities
off of the teacher. Learning coaches at home become the
accountable party.

Editor's Notes

  • #3 This lesson is designed for first grade students who are beginning readers. Each student is expected to have already learned their consonant sounds and now we are focusing on short vowel sounds to create words.
  • #4 These standards cover content, information literacy and technology literacy.
  • #5 I have plans to use this created lesson with my actual first graders next year!
  • #6 There will be many different opportunities for modeling, guided practice, independent practice and assessment to ensure that students are reaching these goals.
  • #7 Since I teach in a cyber school, the only technology equipment that has been provided for every student is a computer with internet access. If students have access to a smartphone, tablet or iPad, they can enhance their engagement in this lesson by accessing the fun activities ahead!
  • #8 Here are the detailed lesson notes for the actual layout of the lesson: Warm Up: Students are shown words like log, top, pot, and pop while waiting for class to begin and they are instructed to read each word to their learning coach. They are also asked to type in the chat box the sound they hear repeated in each word. (/o/). I-Do: The teacher will introduce the sound for short /o/. The teacher will show a QR code that will take the students to this short /o/ song: http://www.starfall.com/n/level-k/song-so/load.htm?f The teacher will then review with students the sound that short /o/ makes. After the silly sounding word video found in the We Do portion, the teacher will model how to read nonsense words for the students. We Do: The teacher and students will view the application sharing website: http://www.starfall.com/n/level-k/letter-o/load.htm?f They will take turns clicking through the activity together to practice with the short sound of /o/. The teacher will then work on a guided activity of sounding out and spelling short /o/ real words. (pot, top, dog, mop, box). After students complete the first section of the You Do below, the teacher will show another QR Code that will take the students to this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0_b8F41M3g . This will review silly sounding words, also known to first graders as nonsense words. After viewing the silly sounding words video, the students will work with the teacher to sort words on the whiteboard to show if they are real or nonsense. After watching the teacher model, the students will practice reading nonsense words. The teacher will instruct on how to create a nonsense word and model on the whiteboard. The teacher will also then send the first Group Me text message to the class with a made up nonsense word using the short /o/ sound. You Do: Students will work individually in a b/o room to spell more short /o/ sounding real words (rock, frog, stop, lock, clock). Students will send short /o/ words that they make up through the Group Me texting app.
  • #9 Informal assessments will take place throughout the entire guided practice and independent practice portions of the lesson. This assessment is more formative!
  • #10 All considerations are listed on the slide. If a student is having technical difficulties, they can access a computer at a library or follow their contingency plan.
  • #11 In the cyber education model, management of technologies is very different than in a brick and mortar classroom!
