This document summarizes an experiment conducted to assess the impact of service workers on the energy efficiency of progressive web apps (PWAs) under different conditions. Seven popular PWAs were tested on high-end and low-end Android devices over WiFi and 2G networks with and without service workers enabled. The results showed that service workers did not significantly influence energy consumption, but network conditions and device type did, with WiFi and high-end devices using less energy. PWA-specific factors also impacted energy usage to a smaller degree. A manual review of the service worker code found variation in complexity and caching strategies but no clear patterns relating to energy efficiency.
