Editor's Notes
Take the people attending the course on a guided tour of the club. Don’t forget to take them to both the boat shed and the board shed. Explain the different boards and also what qualifications you need to use each piece of equipment.
Talk about how the club was formed by Royal Life Saving Society and was formed as Moana SLSC in September 1952. Talk about the original colours coming from the West Torrens Football Club. The first surfboat was the Braemar, followed by the Nashwalk. The Duke Kahanamoku’s surfboard was donated by Hawaiian Olympian Duke Kahanamoku, who is credited for starting to get the surfing craze going in South Australia.
Talk through the different users of Moana SLSC.
Explain about the responsible service of alcohol and also about how we are proud not to have pokies.
Quickly go over this, if people want more details, direct them to the website.
Explain this is a work place and the volunteers have the same rights as all employees would have. This is just aa volunteer place of work.
Send the people in groups to find the different fire exits for the club. Ask everyone to take a picture of the emergency plans on their phone. When everyone is back get the groups to feedback what they have found and what the displayed plans say.
Peter Kerrison is the Moana SLSC WHS and Safety manager for Moana SLSC for the 2017/18 season. However, if you find any issue, please report it your patrol captain or any member of the Board of Management if Peter is not available.
Surfboat = 15 and bronze. Surf rescue board = 13 and SRC or bronze. Surf ski = 15 and bronze. IRB = 15 Bronze and IRB crew, to drive 17 and IRB driver.
