Port authorities have sent notices to the owners of the MSC Chitra, Mediterranean Shipping Company, asking them to pay for the full clean-up costs of the accident where the Chitra collided with the MV Khalijia off the coast of Mumbai. The Chitra is considered the polluter because its cargo contained hazardous materials that spilled into the ocean after the collision. Over 100 containers fell into the sea, including two containing hazardous chemicals, and the navy is conducting sonar surveys to locate them. Both Mumbai Port and Jawaharlal Nehru Port were shut down for many days as a result of the oil spill and containers blocking the seaway.
