A solution is a mixture of two or more substances that dissolve into one another at a molecular or ionic level and cannot be seen once combined, whereas a mixture involves substances that can still be identified and separated out. Key terms include solute, the dissolving substance, and solvent, the substance doing the dissolving. Mixtures can be either heterogeneous, with unevenly mixed parts that can be seen, or homogeneous, with evenly mixed parts that cannot be seen.
