EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANS
Every year, emergencies in the workplace claim lives, cause injuries,
and result in financial loss to companies. Not only does having an
emergency plan of action in place help a company to comply with
OSHA standards, but it can also result in fewer
casualties, prevent further injuries, and lessen the financial blow to a
company when an emergency occurs.
Emergency Response Plans are also called Emergency Action Plans,
and are used interchangeably here.
EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLANS
Emergency Action Plans must be in writing for companies with 11 or
more employees. BUT, companies with 10 or few employees MUST
STILL HAVE AN EMERGENCY ACTION PLAN in place! For these smaller
businesses, the plan needs to at least be shared verbally with
employees.
What IS an Emergency Action Plan?
1.Steps for reporting a fire or other emergency;
2. 2.The steps for emergency evacuation, including variations for specific
types of evacuation and exit route assignments;
3.The steps to be followed by employees who remain to operate
critical plant operations before they evacuate;
4.The steps to account for all employees after evacuation;
5.The steps to be followed by employees performing rescue or medical
duties; and
6.The name or job title of each employee who may be contacted by
other employees who need more information about the plan or an
explanation of their duties under the plan.
What is the Employer Required to Do With the Emergency Response
Plan?
1.Each employer must have and maintain an employee alarm system.
The employee alarm system must use a distinctive signal for each
purpose and comply with the requirements in § 1910.165.
2.Each employer must designate and train EACH EMPLOYEE to
participate in a safe and orderly evacuation of other employees.
3.Each employer must review the Emergency Response Plan with
EACH EMPLOYEE when:
a.The plan is developed or the employee is assigned to the job
b.The employee’s responsibilities regarding the plan change
c. The plan is changed
