Editor's Notes
Good morning everyone. My name is Megan Fisher and I am a third year medical student at Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown, Ohio.
[Intro]
This brings me to the theory of mindset.
Your view of intelligence will impact the way you learn. – 2 mindsets
The goal of mindset theory is to acknowledge which mindset you commonly fall into in various situations and make a conscious decision to improve your response to challenges, obstacles, effort, criticism, and the success of others to further yourself.
2 mindsets. Fixed vs. growth.
Explain both – chart
Its not realistic to expect a growth mindset 100% of the time. The goal is training your response form fixed to growth
So that brings me to the second part of the title of my presentation today: Mindfulness
So what is mindfulness?
The psychological process of bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment
Not a new concept – but new in graduate education to combat depression/culture of medical education
What is taught:
Mindfulness sessions
-eating chocolate
-meditating
-journaling
-breathing
-etc.
[if it works for you keep doing it]
Doesn't work for me
What they should be teaching:
PRESENCE
Presence
Being here – giving your all
Faced with a relentless flood of information and distractions, our brains try to process everything at once increasing our stress, decreasing our effectiveness and negatively impacting our performance. Ironically, we have become too overworked, unfocused, and busy to stop and ask ourselves the most important question: What can we do to break the cycle of being constantly under pressure, always-on, overloaded with information and in environments filled with distractions?
1 activity at a time
100% effort
Effective to-do lists:
Increased - mastery, mindfulness,
Decreased – anxiety, wasted effort, stress
Resilience through failure leads to success
[go through all the factors]
Steps to success compiled from my own experiences, readings, and the help of my fellow peer mentors
[List and explain]
Top 3: growth mindset, celebrate small wins, resilience after failure.
Remember medicine is a journey. There is no right or wrong way to medical school.
You have to develop grit by fostering your passion for medicine and using that as motivation during the difficult parts of the journey.
When they say it’s a marathon not a sprint, they are exactly right.
In order to succeed in this profession we will inevitably fail and have to pick ourselves up and try again. That is why they call medicine a practice after all.
It is full of ups and downs. Your love of medicine must be stronger than your fear of failure.
We must support each other, foster grit, build a culture of resilience – we are family
