Milton Hershey was born on a farm in Pennsylvania in 1857. He had a limited formal education, only completing the fourth grade. He became fascinated with chocolate making machinery at the World's Fair and bought equipment to produce chocolate creations at his Lancaster plant. In 1900, he sold his caramel company for $1 million to focus solely on chocolate. Three years later, he built a new factory in Derry Church, Pennsylvania to take advantage of the local milk supply needed to perfect milk chocolate.
