John Stuart Mill was a 19th century British philosopher who wrote extensively on liberty, utilitarianism, and women's rights. In his 1859 work On Liberty, he argued that the only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. He asserted that the individual liberty of conscience and thought is most conducive to truth and human progress.
