Here is a descriptive paragraph about a place: The old library was filled with the smell of old books and knowledge. The small grey house with the peeling paint and the black roof was literally smashed in half.
You could see the inside of the white bedroom from outside and the door hung from half a
wall. Wooden boards hung from the ceiling and bits of the house were spread all over the
back yard. A huge tree trunk cut into parts lay across the yard and the backyard fence.

8. The big black steaming pot is full of bright yellow rice. Black clam shells, shrimp, green peas, and calamari peek
out of the steaming hot rice. Two shiny silver spoons are neatly tucked into the side of the dish inviting us to
dig in. Steam slowly rises up as the waiter puts the food on our table. I can hear the food still sizzling and the
heavenly smell brings saliva in to my mouth.

11. Descriptive Writing
• A descriptive paragraph has little or no action. Its purpose is to
paint a picture with words. A descriptive paragraph appeals to one
or more of the five senses. A descriptive paper usually includes:
• a subject worthy of description
• emphasis on the five senses
• use of metaphors and similes
• topic sentence which names the thing you are describing
• organize sentences: chronologically or in order of importance
• vocabulary which clarifies
• varied sentence structure
• effective conclusion

EX: The red cedar grows in dry rocky areas from Nova Scotia
to South Florida. While it prefers hills, it does not grow at high
altitudes and will grow well along streams and lakes. These trees
are usually no more than forty feet tall and have a trunk no more
than twenty inches in diameter. It generally takes a conical
shape unless quite aged. Light reddish bark and closely
overlapping leaves which are rounded are common traits of the
red cedar.
