Mikel was raised Catholic as both his parents and grandparents are Catholic. He attended a private religious school and mass until 7th grade. He has a diverse group of friends from different ethnicities and religions. Mikel has lived in Illinois, Manila, and visited Europe and Asia, experiences that have influenced his views on religion. In 7th grade, Mikel began questioning his faith and noticing flaws in religion, and he has been influenced more by pop culture and media than his religious family.

Which is the most congested area of the school canteen
The students hypothesized that placing highly popular restaurants in a smaller enclosed area of the cafeteria would lead to crowding and congestion. They collected data on customer transactions at different restaurants and found that Allegro, located in the smaller area, had the most customers. Red Kimono, also in the smaller area, had the second highest customer transactions despite being in a smaller space than the main cafeteria. The data supported the hypothesis that popular restaurants in confined spaces result in congestion.

Five Maribel’s Story When Are You Going to Have Kids? Ethnicity is associated with nationality and country of origin. Examining ethnicity provides clues about individuals’ values, beliefs, and behaviors and often yields more information than race, particularly on intragroup differences. This is critical in working with clients of Asian or Latino descent. Generic information on racial characteristics provides a helpful starting place for clinicians, but specific information about ethnicity adds to the richness of understanding. In this chapter, Maribel, a Puerto Rican, describes growing up in a poor, Spanish-speaking household; moving around the country; and feeling like a minority everywhere she went. She talks about what she feels was her double life, her pride in her educational accomplishments, and the price she paid for her acculturation and her gender role shifts. As you read, notice how she experienced the frequent moves of her family as she was growing up and how the exposure to racism affected not only her blended identity, but also her decision to become better educated to increase her social status options. Also, notice the losses that came with her gains and how she manages her American identity blended with her identity as a Puerto Rican. Following the story, we explore the relationship between ethnicity and racism, language, social class, gender socialization patterns, and gender role shifts that occur as the identity of the individual shifts. The clinical intervention discusses some ideas for working with ethnic minority couples who are in cultural transition from hierarchical gender roles to more egalitarian modes of relating. Finally, the countertransference section includes a discussion about possible reactions clinicians may have when working with couples who exhibit power imbalances. Maribel’s Story I am a 30-year-old Latina woman. I was born in Puerto Rico and, beginning at the age of 5 years, was raised in Chicago. My parents are both Puerto Rican—born and raised in Puerto Rico. I have one brother, Osvaldo, and three sisters, Daniela, Debora, and Magdalena. Daniela and Debora are half-sisters from my father’s side. They have lived in Puerto Rico all their life, not once having visited the United States. Osvaldo and Magdalena both live in Chicago, but Osvaldo was born in Puerto Rico, and Magdalena was born in Connecticut. I was raised in a Spanish-speaking household. When I was in the first grade, I was taught English and was then placed in a bilingual class. I learned English so well, I was transferred to English-only classes and afterward was only in English-only classes. I was still able to retain my knowledge of Spanish because I spoke English only at school and Spanish only at home. To this day, I am very grateful that I was taught to appreciate the Spanish language, despite my need to learn English. Muslim Americans are a diverse population who practice the religion of Islam and live in America. They believe in one God and follow teachings from the Quran and prophets like Muhammad. Their level of religious commitment varies but they are united in their core beliefs. Though facing oppression, Muslim Americans are well-educated and financially stable on average. They contribute to American society while maintaining their cultural and religious identities.
Cultural Pluralism
Cultural pluralism refers to the existence of multiple cultural groups within a larger society that maintain distinct cultural identities while coexisting peacefully. It allows smaller groups to preserve their unique cultural practices and values as long as they are consistent with the laws and values of the wider society. Examples include acceptance of Chinese calligraphy classes in the US and Indian yoga sessions in other countries. The concept first emerged in the early 20th century as a response to issues around immigration and national identity in countries like the US. While similar to multiculturalism, cultural pluralism involves the larger culture incorporating aspects of smaller cultures, whereas multiculturalism respects distinct cultures separately. Cultural pluralism is an increasingly accepted model worldwide.

Common Peace Community
Alan Bean has started an initiative called the Common Peace Community aimed at bringing together moderate churches to discuss social issues through the lens of the poor and marginalized. The Sisters of St. Paul arrived in the Philippines in 1904 and established their first foundation in Dumaguete. Over the following decades, they opened numerous schools, hospitals, and pastoral centers across the country. Today there are over 500 Sisters in the Philippines engaged in education, healthcare, and pastoral work, with additional Sisters serving in mission abroad. Through their ministries, the Sisters of St. Paul have greatly contributed to the Church and society in the Philippines for over a century.

He excelled academically from a young age, becoming valedictorian of his high school class. He was inspired to pursue the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship after discovering it in an encyclopedia in his youth. Smelser went on to receive degrees from Harvard and Oxford and had a distinguished career as a sociologist, including serving as president of the American Sociological Association.

Cultural Genogram
In creating my personal Cultural Genogram, I have come to understand patterns, beliefs, and societal influences central to my family that have changed over three generations. While I have included information from both my paternal family, and my maternal family, I have focused primarily on my mother’s side of the family. My parents divorced when I was one year old and I’ve had very little contact with my father, and have very little information about his side of the family. My mother’s side of the family had a great influence on me. The cultural norms and patterns that existed in my family played out over generations and to this day, still exist in our family interaction and environment.
My cultural genogram starts in the 1920’s and 1930’s when my grandparent’s were born. The socio-political context of my grandparent’s birth to adulthood (1920’s- 1950’s) had an effect on their families’ social norms and behaviors. In the late 1920’s, and early 1930’s the U.S. was at the start and height of the Great Depression. In 1932, Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected President based on his promises to create Federal Government programs to end the Great Depression. Within 100 days the New Deal was signed into law, which created 42 new agencies designed to create jobs, allow unionization, and provide unemployment insurance which helped to alleviate some of our country’s economic deficit (DuBois & Miley, 2014, p. 38, 275). Although my mother’s parents were both born into middle class white families, they were also born into a nation wide economic downfall, which affected the socioeconomic status of their families. It exposed my grandmother to financial sacrifice at a young age, and therefore had an effect on her childhood. In 1941, when my grandparents were in their preteen years, the U.S. was attacked on Pearl Harbor, and this caused the start of WWII. None of my family members including my grandfathers fought in WWII because they were too young, or had physical disabilities that prevented them from joining the war. In 1945, when the war ended the United Nations was established, with many agencies for dealing with world social welfare problems, including the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), and the World Health Organization (WHO) (Barker, 1995). At this time, many community organization efforts were created to address community problems stemming from WWII (DuBois & Miley, 2014, p. 40). While I am uncertain if my Grandparents were deeply involved in any of these social welfare organizations, I feel it is important to recognize that they, as members of society were in some ways affected by social welfare. Social welfare addresses the “general well-being” needs of individuals and meets the universal needs of the population at large (DuBois & Miley, 2014, p. 16).
Both my mother and father were born in the 1950’s. At this time the U.S. was at war with Korea, and in 1957 the U.S civil rights act was passed (Barker, 1995).
