- In the spirit of community efforts to generate ideas for how Google Fiber can change lives in Kansas City we partnered with Social Media Club of Kansas City to create “Building the Gigabit City,” a large-scale Google Fiber brainstorming session with a diverse cross-community group. hold a day-long event designed to consider needs and opportunities for seven different sub-communities within Kansas City. We recruited nearly ninety participants representing varying perspectives and levels of experience to participate in the brainstorming session. The in-person brainstorming session was enriched by input from hundreds of individuals who completed an online survey before the event addressing needs, opportunities, and challenges for target audience groups along with offering ideas on how Google Fiber could change lives in the community. These responses provide a starting point for various exercises during the day. By bringing together a group of smart, interested, creative people and using these Brainzooming exercises, we generated hundreds of ideas and shaped potential concepts by the close of the day. The concepts, typically encompassing multiple ideas, included a description, a brief overview, and a listing of potential benefits for the target audience.
- What’s even better about this great idea it’s almost immediately instigated a very special multi-generational video. Paula Holmquist, a participant in the live brainstorming session (and someone who the incredible story of our meeting two days before the brainstorming session requires a blog post all its own), heard the idea at our report out session on November 10. The next day, Veteran’s Day, Paula took her father, a veteran of the Korean War, to Kansas City’s Korean War Veteran memorial and the Liberty Memorial, to capture his memories of his service to our country. The video is absolutely delightful, especially as Paula’s dad interacts with another veteran talking about how Navy stories grow in grandeur with each telling. Her dad passed away about two weeks later.
- From the start, we sought to be inclusive by addressing the broad community interests that will ultimately thrive in our Gigabit City. We built upon the work and thinking that had already gone on in so many quarters about what Google Fiber could and should mean for Kansas City. Just as each participant brought individual knowledge, perspective, and experience to the session, you'll see some familiar ideas replayed and augmented. You'll also see some very new thinking about what the Gigabit City can be. For the final report, which included more than 120 pages of ideas and concepts, we organized it under the community themes of Living, Learning, and Leading. Our goal, irrespective of the particular community group, was to take the best advantage of the assembled expertise to imagine how ultra high-speed internet service can change lives in Kansas City. We wanted to share the voices of the many passionate Kansas Citians who participated in Building the Gigabit City. We maintained the vibrancy, insights, aspirations, and cautions of everyone who shared their perspectives in the effort. Just as the input was crowdsourced, the results are as well. The report was offered free to anyone who wanted it, and it has been downloaded by people in 31 states and 28 countries.
