2. Dementia in ExtraCare
Earlsdon Park Village, Coventry
• 262 apartments, potentially over 300 residents
• Around 30% residents will experience mental health issues notably
dementia and depression

3. Developing the Enriched
Opportunities Programme®
437 residents with diagnosed Dementia
587 other mental health support needs
• 2007 to 2009 completed a randomised controlled trial of a new approach to living
with dementia and other mental health issues in ExtraCare
• Development of a specialist staff role the “EOP Locksmith” who unpicks issues
around the person’s experience of their condition

4. EOP Research Outcomes
Residents supported by a Locksmith were…
• 50% less likely to move into a care home
• 42% less time spent in hospital as an in-patient
• More likely to have their mental health condition diagnosed
Residents also…
• Rated their quality of life more positively
• Experienced decreased symptoms of depression
• Experienced greater feelings of social support and inclusion

October 2014 – Community based
Locksmith pilot began
September 2015 – Locksmith had
supported 36 individuals following
hospital discharge. 69% remained living
in their own home
March 2016 – service expanded to
include a second Locksmith
