The Michael Brown shooting by police officer Darren Wilson in August sparked racial debates and protests. While witnesses' accounts differed and evidence was conflicting, many African Americans felt Brown's death was unjust and signified racial issues in the justice system. Supporters of Wilson acknowledged Brown had been involved in a store theft shortly before and said Wilson was justified in shooting, but others believed racial profiling or excessive force may have been factors in Brown's death. The case continues to be discussed with differing opinions on what truly occurred.

1. MICHAEL BROWN SHOOTING – BLACK LIVES MATTER

Darren Wilson has caused civil unrest across the black and white race. Although
the sparked racial debates are somewhat relevant, it still raises the question:
WHY WOULD YOU SHOOT AN UNARMED INDIVIDUAL 8 -12 TIMES?
African Americans are of the opinion that the justice system has not failed the
people it was built to protect (the white race). However, it does come across as a
very subjective viewpoint but is relative to a certain extent. In their opinion,
America is not seeming to handle this tragedy in a dignifying manner especially
with the way the trial was dismissed which has spurred an outrage of protests
some peaceful and some violent for the injustice Michael Brown faced.
Contrastingly, in a country where African Americans cause 80% of the crime
cases committed, Darren does have some justification to his means of shooting.
Brown had stolen from a neighborhood convenience store and when Darren
approached him, he allegedly fled which led to the multiple firing of his gun. It is
important to note that witnesses’ reports for this case differ and so there are
various variations of the Michael Brown shooting.
Similarly, there happens to be conflicting evidence of Darren being informed
about the theft and Brown’s involvement in the crime scene. The Ferguson Police
Department released a video a few days after the shooting. In this video, Brown
was forcefully pushing a store employee who was preventing him from leaving
with what he had stolen.
It is sad, that yet again another young soul has been laid to rest. It can be said
that, racial profiling could have influenced Darren or excessive force while
handling the gun, which caused his outburst of shots that eventually killed
Brown. It is such a pity that the physical evidence in the Michael Brown case
supports the officer.
Although this case is still undergoing a series of debates and protests, people
have been drawing differing conclusions as to the accuracy of what they feel

2. happened. African Americans firmly believe that Brown’s shooting signified
injustice towards the black race regardless of what happened.

If Brown didn’t try and reach for his gun and then charge towards him, he may
not have fired the gun as many times as he did… BUT who knows?
