In Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men Candy suffers due to loneliness and isolation. To start out with
Carlson kills Candy’s dog. Candy was trying to defend his dog when he said “I don’t mind takin’ care of
him”. (45) Candy is trying to find a reason so that he can keep his dog. Candy is already lonely with his
dog. This would make him even lonelier without his dog. The next thing that shows Candy’s loneliness is
when he says he would pay for most of George and Lennie's house. They were all talking about their
dream place when Candy says “That’s 350 bucks I’d put in”. (58) Candy is offering to give all his money
to them if he can just stay with them. He is also willing to work. He must really be lonely if he is offering
to buy most of a stranger’s house. The last thing Candy says that shows his loneliness is when he is
saying that he would leave everything he owns to George and Lennie. When they were all discussing
about the house Candy says “I’d make a will and leave my share in case I kick off early. Candy only does
this because he has no one else to give his money to when he dies. Candy has made friends with George
and Lennie so he throws that out there. In conclusion candy is lonely because his dog died and he shows
this by offering to give everything he has to George and Lennie,
