1. Still waters run deep with Glenn Krieg,
the CFO of Morgan Murphy Media.
But while he’s a reserved and quiet per-
son, “he’s always there to provide help for
the association,” remarks Mary Collins,
MFM and BCCA’s president and CEO.
The former MFM Board member “is
good counsel. He has helped us recruit
people to both the Radio and TV Com-
mittees. He has helped us find speakers for
numerous sessions at the annual confer-
ence,” adds Collins.
Krieg is a Wisconsin man, born and
bred, and the privately held company he
works for has deep roots in the state as
well. Morgan Murphy is a third-gener-
ation, family owned operation with sev-
eral radio and TV stations in Wisconsin,
along with the magazine Madison, some
digital assets and other broadcast proper-
ties in Washington, Iowa and Idaho.
After attending the University of
Wisconsin, Krieg became the assurance
department head at Grant Thornton LLP
in Madison, then joined Madison-based
Morgan Murphy in 1997.
In addition to his involvement with
MFM, he’s a member of the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants,
the Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public
Accountants and the Institute of Manage-
ment Accountants. He also is chairman of
the board of the Monona Terrace Commu-
nity and Convention Center in Madison.
Revenue recognition is of interest
to many MFM and BCCA mem-
bers. And Suzanne Tuxill, the corporate
controller for Salem Media Group, has
become one of the “go to” people with-
in the two organizations when questions
come up about the complex and evolv-
ing topic.
“Revenue recognition is something
that we’ve been talking about for a very
long time, but it’s now impacting the
media industry,” explains MFM’s Col-
lins. “The U.S. Securities and Exchange
Commission announced they were going
to change revenue recognition standards
a few years ago, and the results of those
changes are just starting to be felt. Sue
has worked tirelessly to make the mem-
bership aware of what this means to
them.”
Tuxill has been involved with several
Distance Learning Seminars as well as
Media Finance Focus sessions on the topic.
And she’s also been a “stalwart” member of
the Radio Committee, Collins says.
Tuxill has been with Salem for 10
years and oversees the accounting and
financial reporting for all of Salem’s
radio stations, networks, Web sites and
publishing units throughout the U.S.
In addition to revenue recognition, her
areas of expertise include SEC financial
reporting, Sarbanes-Oxley compliance
and business process improvements.
When MFM sought to deepen its
involvement with financial manag-
ers with a series of special “localism” events
held in various markets, Michael (Shane)
Turner stepped up to the plate.
Turner, who is a controller at Turner
Broadcasting System Inc. (and no rela-
tion to Ted Turner), worked hard along-
side Szabo Associates’ president C. Robin
Szabo to spearhead the very first event,
held in Atlanta last year.
“He found a speaker and made sure
everything worked out with the venue
[at TBS’s headquarters],” recalls MFM’s
Mary Collins. And for an encore, he
helped organize a second localism event
in Atlanta this past March.
Turner is a key person within a large
team of TBS staff members who work
together to serve MFM’s best interests.
“All of these folks are doing this on their
own time – after hours and on weekends,”
Collins says.
Turner’s day job gives him plenty to
do. He is a controller within TBS’s advi-
sory services group, where he helps set
accounting policies, evaluates account-
ing literature and provides interpretive
guidance to the company’s accounting
groups.
Prior to his current position, Turner led
the content and other revenue accounting
and capital finance shared services groups
within TBS.
