It discusses the research design, target population, sample size and design, data collection instruments and procedures. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches will be used, including a descriptive and explanatory research design. The target population is hoteliers, tour firms, local and international tourists in Eldoret town, with a sample size of 50 respondents selected through simple random sampling. Primary data will be collected using open-ended questionnaires and observation, with questionnaires divided into primary, secondary and tertiary sections and addressing topics like security levels, awareness creation, and effects of insecurity.

CHAPTER 3
3.0 RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
3.1 INTRODUCTION
This research intends to come up with the underlying implications of insecurity to the
stakeholders in the tourism industry, taking the case study of Eldoret town. This section consists
of Research Design, Target Population, Sample Size and Design, Data Collection Instruments,
Validity and Reliability of Research Instruments, Data Collection Procedure and Data Analysis
Procedure
3.2 RESEARCH DESIGN
The design of this research will embrace both qualitative and quantitative approaches of
research. The design of this research will also take the format of descriptive and explanatory
designs. The study will aim to unearth the underlying implications of insecurity on the effective
performance of the tourism industry, using the case study of Eldoret town. In this it will try to
describe the existing relationship, if any between the implications of insecurity and performance
of various tourism stakeholders. The various implications of insecurity will thereon be used in
the research design.
Nevertheless, as stated above, the design of this research will also take into account the use of
descriptive design. This enhances the discovery of new insights that might help in explaining the
likely causes of insecurity within the tourism industry. At all times, the two research designs
described above would be used either hand in hand or alternatively.
3.3 TARGET POPULATION
The population targeted for this research is the hoteliers, the tour firms, the local
tourists/domestic tourists as well as international tourists within Eldoret town. The total
population targeted is about three hundred individuals drawn from the four named groups above.
3.4 SAMPLE SIZE AND DESIGN
Sampling is that part of the statistical practice concerned with the selection of individual or
observations intended to yield some knowledge about a population of concern, especially for the
purposes of statistical inferences(mugenda,1999).According to Mugenda and Mugenda(1999)
30% will be used t calculate the sample size. Therefore the sample size will be 50 respondents.
Simple random sampling will be considered, whereby, a number will be given to every member
of the accessible population and then the respondents will selected randomly.
3. 3.5 DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS
Both primary and secondary data will be collected. In order to ensure validity and reliability of
the data, primary data will be collected using the following instruments:
i. Questionnaire
ii. Observation
Questionnaire
Open-ended questionnaire, where the participants will have a chance to express their views will
be adopted. The questionnaire will be in three sections:

Secondary
Tertiary sections.
