The Aerobics and Fitness Association of America’s Primary Group
Exercise Certification is a review of AFAA’s Basic Exercise Standards and
Guidelines, anatomy, exercise science, exercise evaluation and exam
criteria. This certification workshop prepares you to be a group exercise
instructor who is knowledgeable and ready to teach. Your pre-study
preparation will help you to become familiar with AFAA’s guidelines and
formats for teaching. Once you are at the workshop, you will practice
your teaching skills and become familiar with teaching in front of others.
Early registration is advised so you can prepare yourself for the written
practical exam at the end of the certification workshop day. Self study
and prior experience teaching is helpful. The cost for registration is

YOGAFIT TEACHER TRAINING LEVEL I

This informative two-day workshop gives instructors the tools to create
dynamic, user-friendly, fitness-oriented yoga classes. The learning
includes correct physical execution, transitions and modifications to yoga
poses, sequencing, class formats, effective ways to communicate the
mind/body connection, and methods of developing safe teaching skills
for 40+ poses. Level 1 is designed for beginners teaching yoga,
practicing yoga, and learning yoga. For experienced Yoga instructors, this
workshop is designed to offer new skills to teach Yoga classes in the
mainstream health club or gym environment, focusing on the physical
fitness benefits of traditional yoga poses. Although many attending have
some yoga or fitness experience, the only prerequisite is the desire to
learn and commitment to attend.

Useable, Cue-able, Do-able Double Step – Melissa Layne
Does there really exist a logical, systematic approach to take step classes
to the next level? YES! And the next logical level is DOUBLE STEP! We’ll
focus on how to successfully cue a double step class and the logical place
to start building your choreography. Through lecture, drills and
experimental approach, we will take the “average” step class to the hour
that has your members lining up outside the doors! Using tap-free and 32-
count phrasing, everyone can cue all the combinations we do to take them
back and use them!
Smart Cycling – Abbie Appel
This indoor Cycling program brings a fresh, healthy dimension to studio
cycling. By incorporating motivational techniques and coaching with sports
psychology, biomechanics and exercise physiology, we can create
workouts that are fun, motivational and results-based. We will discuss
cycling principles and current research to assist instructors develop a
cycling workout that is user-friendly and appeals to a variety of participants.
Developing the Pilates Eye – Kim Fabian
To help participants get the most out of your Pilates classes, you need to
develop an eye for proper form and alignment. In this session, you'll learn
to identify common mistakes--and correct them through creative cueing
techniques, tactile adjustments and modifications.
Targeting the Core – Learn the Five Core-training Stage
Progressions – Fabio Comana
Effective core training is a term generally misunderstood by trainers, yet we
all recognize the importance of core training. This session will provide
evidence-based information on the integrated roles of the three muscle
layers and present a five-stage progressive model for effective core
conditioning. Trainers will learn and understand how to teach clients to
activate, isolate and integrate core and abdominal muscles and how to
design, implement and progress each stage appropriately for their clients
to achieve results.

The purpose of this seminar is to share information to create effective and
fun workouts for personal trainers to use with their clients. Information will
be presented in a practical fashion, so that attendees can immediately
apply their knowledge and understanding. Many exercises will emphasize
dynamic explosive movements, and demonstrated with attention to proper
progression.
Training the Pregnant Client – Annette Lang
This course will teach the trainers all of the current guidelines by the
American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). We take the
medical/physiological changes and relate that specifically to personal
training and group settings. The trainers will learn how to make decisions
regarding individual movements, exercises and sports during the 40
weeks. Trainers will be able to speak to pregnant health club members and
group participants about the relevant guidelines and important
considerations everyone should remember.
Postpartum recommendations will also be presented.
What Do We Have To Lose? – Candace Grasso
With the obesity epidemic we’re facing, now more than ever, people are
asking this question not only of themselves, but also for the health of their
family and friends. With so much misinformation out there; it’s hard to
decipher what’s true and what’s not. As fitness professionals, it’s our
responsibility to be informed. We must be able to recognize HYPE and fads
when we hear them. We have to stay abreast of the latest research and
have the true “skinny” on how it all works. What’s the best weight loss
program?? Which one should I use? What really makes you fat?? What will
make you lean?? What is the “FAT BURNING ZONE”?? What about the
glycemic index, does it hold the key??
This lecture will provide you with the truth about getting and staying lean.
SO when it comes to exploring the truth and busting the myths about
nutrition and weight loss, ask yourself …WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO LOSE?

Tubing Challenge – Total Body Fit – Carol Murphy
Take a fresh look at one of the most popular pieces of equipment used in
91% of the clubs today – tried and true ~ Tubing. This session is packed
full of solo and partner resistance tubing exercises, designed to enhance
fitness and performance goals. The workshop covers why and how to
employ the fundamentals of functional performance and functional
movement patterns to create “usable strength”.
Aqua Trek Deep – Marti Boutin
This deep experience, based on the principles of treadmill trekking, will
challenge you in an interval format that combines incline and speed drills.
Combined with visualization of some of the world’s greatest peaks, this
program will take your students to new fitness heights!

This workshop will discuss and show ways to make step classes more
personal and interactive – how to create an atmosphere that encourages
greater participant enthusiasm, member camaraderie, and increased
exercise adherence. Learn what you as an instructor can do to develop and
heighten the personal connections between you and the members and
among the members themselves. The workshop will also demonstrate
current trends in step aerobics and ways to incorporate them to stimulate
and motivate participants.

“Monitor” your cycle classes and help them “zone out” of their fitness ruts
and soar!!!! It’s amazing, especially in today’s high tech arena; the number
of people training without heart rate monitors. As a professional athlete
and coach, I can honestly say, you won’t find anyone associated with team
FIT IS IT, beginning a training session without one strapped to their chests,
including myself.With the help of their extensive data and feedback, as well
as the accurate information they provide and file, not using one can be
likened to FLYING BLIND, literally stabbing in the dark in the hopes of

Athlete Injury Prevention – Robert Rose
This hands on workshop will teach each athlete basic injury prevention and
rehabilitation. It will cover the most common athletic injuries including
Ankle Inversion Sprains, Muscle Pulls or Strains and ACL and other Knee
Injuries. Drills, program design and equipment usage will be demonstrated.

Sports conditioning continues to be a popular trend within our industry, but
a growing concern revolves around the skill-and condition-level
appropriateness of such programs. This workout will instruct participants
through basic movement patterns to improve movement efficiency in
learning more advanced skills without potentially increasing the risk for
injury.
Health Behavior Change: Theory and Practical Tips for the
Personal Trainer – Annette Lang
What makes people decide to change a behavior? Why does it seem so
easy for some, and so difficult for others? Why is it easier for you to change
some things, and much harder to adapt to other habits? In this workshop,
we introduce traditional concepts related to behavior change, and discuss
specific ways that you can use this information in helping potential and
current clients in their personal fitness endeavors.

What nutrients do kids need to make learning successful? Which foods
make neurotransmitters that control mood in teenagers? Take the basic
nutrition class and apply it to the kids and the mature population and see
why choices are poor in the most important stages of life.What happens to
daily requirements as we become sedentary adults? This nutrition lecture
goes a step further to help us explore the needs in the growing years and
the golden years.

Are you looking for new ideas to train your upper body in your strength
classes? Let Abbie lead you through a workout where no area is overlooked
including the back, chest, shoulders, arms and even the abdominals. By
combining the body bar and a lightly resistant tube you’ll walk away with
at least 10 different exercises that isolate these muscles but also integrate
the entire body to promote strength, balance and improved posture.

Work your body, totally, with this combination cardio/strength workout.
Fun, effective, usable cardio choreography will get your heart pumping and

This workshop will discuss the benefits of interval training and demonstrate
a variety of formats that can be used in group exercise or personal training.
Learn how to design a time-efficient workout, choosing the type of
equipment appropriate to the goal, and how to maximize the benefits.
H.I.T. the Road – Kim Fabian
Kick your intensity up a notch and discover the subtle, but powerful,
differences of working in intervals at or above anaerobic threshold. Learn
strategies for drills and class designs that will motivate your classes to
push past their perceived limits, increase anaerobic capacity and improve
their power on the bike.
Multi Level Yoga (Land) – Marti Boutin
Bring more participants into your yoga class by offering many options to
each asana (pose). Learn how to teach a class that will meet the needs of
all students by layering. This technique will introduce poses to new
students allowing them to practice safely and at the same time allows more
advanced students to take their practice to the next level.

This hands-on workshop will teach each participant the essential keys to

HOW TO CREATE A HOME TRAINING routine CONNECTED TO SPECIFIC
CLIENT NEEDS. The ability to find a "space" in one's home or gym and to
truly be yourself with no stress and distractions is very difficult. With the
steps I will provide, you will be able to allow your clients to break barriers
and find a sense of accomplishment that will not only make the sessions
with you more valuable, but allow them to see how fitness can be

“Tipping the Scales” – Nutritional Assessments for Weight
Management – Fabio Comana
Sixty-eight percent of all individuals joining health clubs join with the same
goal of losing weight, yet many of our clients fail to help their clients
achieve their weight loss goals, hence trainers seek tools to help clients
achieve these weight loss goals successfully. Effective weight management
requires knowledge and understanding of metabolism, fuel use and the use
of effective tools to determine calories “in” and “out” while remaining within
scope of practice. Join us to learn more on effective weight management
and gather the tools to quickly and effectively assess caloric intake and
expenditure.

With special focus on alignment and total body training, Abbie will lead you
through a unique body-weight only, strength training session that reviews

Love the power you feel when kicking and punching? This cardio-boxing
class offers a challenging program designed for individuals demanding
high intensity in aquatic environments. Interval training sequences are
designed with kickboxing techniques, including jabs, cross punches, and
uppercuts. This is an exciting option for water enthusiasts of all levels.
Cardio Strength Interval – Carol Murphy
Experience the fun of taking the Resist-A-Ball to a whole new level that
combines easy to follow but challenging aerobic moves and strength
exercise in intervals, resulting in a great total body workout. This calorie
burning, muscle-conditioning workout will excite and delight your members
as it tones their abs, arms, hips and thighs. Perfect for anyone who seeks
a heart pumping, playful, total body workout.

With special focus on lower body work, this class discusses the benefits of
traditional and untraditional glute training on an unstable surface. Using
the stability ball, Abbie will take you from the least challenging base moves
with appropriate modifications to the most challenging progressions, in a
multi-level group exercise class. Come away with at least 10 different
exercises in multiple positions that will motivate your most demanding
participants to achieve the most positive end result.

trying every gimmick, supplement and program out there promising magic

Abbie Appel is an internationally recognized
fitness educator. As a consultant for Resist-
A-Ball, Pilates Institute of America, Body
Bar and Reebok, Abbie is a program
development specialist and provides ACE
and AFAA continuing education for group
fitness managers, instructors and
personal trainers. She has contributed
material to both consumer publications
such as Self and Prevention and industry
journals such as IDEA Fitness Journal and Club
Success. Abbie has also starred in 5 fitness videos.
Most recently she was named ECA’s Best New Presenter of 2008 and
has been on the IDEA Group Fitness Advisory Committee since 2007.
She holds certifications from ACE,AFAA, NASM, Spinning and PIA Pilates.
Marti Boutin presents educational programs
worldwide and is an author for several
publications. She resides in Fort Myers,
FL. where she works as a personal trainer
and group fitness leader and is the
owner of Heart Dancing Fitness which
provides instructor training and DVD’s.
She is a training specialist for AEA, ISCA,
and Team SPRI and was awarded AEA’s
Fitness Professional of the Year award in
1995. Her certifications include AEA, ACE,
AFAA, NASM, AAAI-ISMA, ISCA, YogaFit.
Ellie Ciolfi, BS, CCS, NSCA-CPT, ACE-CPT, IDEA Elite trainer
A national presenter in the fitness industry,Ellie has
more than 13 years experience as both a
trainer and manager. She has presented at
IHRSA, Club Industry and NEHRSA
conferences and has been published in
newspapers and magazines, including
Club Success Magazine, SmartWoman
Magazine and the Baltimore Examiner. A
former collegiate soccer player, she has
competed in natural bodybuilding contests,
run the Marine Corps Marathon and
competed nationally in TaeKwonDo. She holds
the rank of second degree black belt. She founded a
Maryland nonprofit organization, Strength In Numbers, Inc., dedicated to
helping women and children at risk. Her all-volunteer programs served the
House of Ruth, TurnAround, Inc. and My Sister's Place, non-profits serving
the at-risk population.
Fabio Comana, M.A., M.S., ACE-CPT & LWMC, ACSM H/FI, CSCS,
CISSN, Exercise Physiologist and Research
Scientist American Council on Exercise. An
exercise physiologist and spokesperson for
ACE, and faculty at San Diego State
University and UC San Diego teaching
courses in Exercise Science and
Nutrition. Prior to ACE, he was a college
head coach, and strength and
conditioning coach; and managed health
clubs for Club One. A national and
international presenter, frequently featured on
television, radio, internet, and in print
publications, and has authored chapters in various
textbooks.
Kim Fabian has 17 years of experience as
an award-winning health and lifestyle writer,
businesswoman and advisor of top
performers. A personal trainer, Spinning
instructor and master instructor for SPIN
Pilates, she has presented at fitness
conferences across the East Coast. Kim
also is president of Ovations Inc., a
company that offers training programs to
drive peak performance in organizations. Kim
takes corporate teams out of the work
environment to experience a variety of activities –
including golf, cooking, Pilates and scavenger hunts – and applies the
learnings back to the work environment. She has been featured on
numerous radio and television programs across the country, as well as in
many publications, including The New York Times, Washington Post, First
for Women, Fit and Baltimore Magazine.

Candace Grasso Candace Grasso is the
owner and C.E.O. of Fit Is It. Her fitness
corporation runs full tilt with the help of
several independent contractors and
employees. She has been in the industry
for over sixteen years and is one of a few
select athletes in the country to hold the
prestigious title of Power Bars Team Elite
member. She has been training, coaching
and competing in marathons around the world
from London to Dublin to Honolulu. Candace
holds National Certifications and is the nutrition and
fitness consultant for two top surgical practices in Baltimore. She is one
of the most highly sought after Master Class and Continuing Education
Providers in this country and abroad. Candace recently presented her
continuing education courses to the Hualai Spa and Four Seasons Resort
in Kona Hawaii ~ rated the #1 spa and resort in North America. Candace
can been seen on WBAL news as she is their regular weekend Feature

George Kassouf has been teaching group
exercise in the Washington, DC area for
over 20 years and trained numerous
instructors. Owner of GETFITwithGeorge,
a personal training and fitness education
business, he is known for his creative
approaches to choreography and fitness
and his offbeat humor. George
coordinates the group exercise schedule
for The World Bank, one of the largest
corporate fitness centers on the East Coast. He
has presented workshops and classes at DCAC,
Richmond Fall Fitness Forums, the Merritt Athletic Club Professional
Fitness Conference, and AFPA's Beach Jam. George is ACSM-certified as
a health/fitness instructor, ACE-certified as a personal trainer, and AFAA-
certified as an aerobics and step instructor. He is also certified to teach
Pilates (Fitour) and spinning (Schwinn), and he received a certification as a
resistance equipment analyst through Focus on Fitness.
Annette Lang has been in the fitness industry
since 1983, working in sales, education and
management. She is one of the most
sought after conference presenters in the
US, including IHRSA, Club Industry, IDEA,
NSCA, AFPA. She teaches an average of
58 workshops each year at health clubs
throughout the US. Annette has a
masters degree in health education, and is
a private personal trainer in NY city.
Melissa Layne, MSEd, is a faculty member in
the Exercise Physiology and Physical Education
Departments of NGCSU. She began her
career over 20 years ago with a BS in P.E.
and a Masters in Exercise Physiology. She
has taught elementary PE, coordinated
fitness programs for Royal Caribbean and
Home Depot and managed an exercise
program for a team of orthopedic
surgeons. Melissa is a member of the
educational faculty for SCW, SFR, HYDROfit
and a DVD featured presenter for SCW. She is
certified by ACE, AFAA, AEA, SCW and several
specialty organizations, as well as the state of Georgia as a Health and
Physical Educator for grades K through 12.
Mark Miller, MS, ATC, CSCS is Vice-President
of the Merritt Athletic Club.
Mark a former Strength and Conditioning
Coach for the Washington Capitals and
Bobsled association and currently a
featured speaker at Club Industry, IHRSA,
MACMA, GGOB, and NEHRSA
conventions. He has over 17 years of
experience in the fitness industry. Mark
writes for a variety of club industry
magazines on many topics and has trained
and helped educate hundreds of successful
trainers.
Carol Murphy was recently recognized as a 2008
Finalist for Instructor of the Year for IDEA. She is
the National Programming Director for
Resist-A-Ball, and a Master Trainer for
Reebok, Body Bar, Drums Alive and
Gliding. Her certifications include ACSM,
NASM, ACE , AFAA and CanFitPro.

Rob Rose CSCS, CCS
Director of Explosive Performance Programs and President of Sport
Specific Consulting. Rob has been conditioning athletes since 1990 and
is considered a leader in reaction and first-step training. He has used his
innovative ideas in training top level professional,
college, and amateur athletes for football,
soccer, basketball, hockey, baseball, and
lacrosse. Rob graduated from George
Mason University with a degree in sports
medicine and worked for five years in the
field of athletic training and sports
physical therapy. He conducts lectures
and workshops on sports-specific training
throughout the nation.
Debi Vincent is the owner of Active Body & Health Inc., a Personal
Training and Pilates Facility in Severna Park, MD.
During her 20 years in the fitness industry, she
has established herself as a leader in the
fitness industry. As a Nationally Certified
Personal Trainer, Group exercise
instructor and Pilates Instructor, Debi
utilizes her skills while training her
regular clientele at her studio and
training instructors. Debi was a National
Aerobic Competitor and Regional
Champion as well as a highly competitive
collegiate gymnast. She holds a degree in
Fitness Management from Lock Haven University as
well as numerous Fitness Certifications. For the past 10 years, Debi has
been presenting and teaching workshops to other instructors at National
Conventions and health clubs. With her energy, enthusiasm and passion
for helping others to achieve their goals, Debi was able to open her studio
in 2003 with her husband Dave. Debi and Active Body & Health Inc. have
trained dancers, gymnasts, skaters, tennis players and lacrosse players.

Through lecture, drills and experimental approach, we will take the “average” step class to the hour that has your members lining up outside the doors! Using tap-free and 32- count phrasing, everyone can cue all the combinations we do to take them back and use them! Smart Cycling – Abbie Appel This indoor Cycling program brings a fresh, healthy dimension to studio cycling. By incorporating motivational techniques and coaching with sports psychology, biomechanics and exercise physiology, we can create workouts that are fun, motivational and results-based. Developing the Pilates Eye – Kim Fabian To help participants get the most out of your Pilates classes, you need to develop an eye for proper form and alignment. In this session, you'll learn to identify common mistakes--and correct them through creative cueing techniques, tactile adjustments and modifications. Targeting the Core – Learn the Five Core-training Stage Progressions – Fabio Comana Effective core training is a term generally misunderstood by trainers, yet we all recognize the importance of core training. This session will provide evidence-based information on the integrated roles of the three muscle layers and present a five-stage progressive model for effective core conditioning. Trainers will learn and understand how to teach clients to activate, isolate and integrate core and abdominal muscles and how to design, implement and progress each stage appropriately for their clients to achieve results. This is How We Roll – Ellie Ciolfi The purpose of this seminar is to share information to create effective and fun workouts for personal trainers to use with their clients. Information will be presented in a practical fashion, so that attendees can immediately apply their knowledge and understanding. Many exercises will emphasize dynamic explosive movements, and demonstrated with attention to proper progression. Training the Pregnant Client – Annette Lang This course will teach the trainers all of the current guidelines by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG). We take the medical/physiological changes and relate that specifically to personal training and group settings. The trainers will learn how to make decisions regarding individual movements, exercises and sports during the 40 weeks. Trainers will be able to speak to pregnant health club members and group participants about the relevant guidelines and important considerations everyone should remember. Postpartum recommendations will also be presented. What Do We Have To Lose? – Candace Grasso With the obesity epidemic we’re facing, now more than ever, people are asking this question not only of themselves, but also for the health of their family and friends. With so much misinformation out there; it’s hard to decipher what’s true and what’s not. As fitness professionals, it’s our responsibility to be informed. We must be able to recognize HYPE and fads when we hear them. We have to stay abreast of the latest research and have the true “skinny” on how it all works. What’s the best weight loss program?? Which one should I use? What really makes you fat?? What will make you lean?? What is the “FAT BURNING ZONE”?? What about the glycemic index, does it hold the key?? This lecture will provide you with the truth about getting and staying lean.
