William Shakespeare was an English poet and playwright from 1564-1616. He wrote 37 plays, 154 sonnets, and several other poems. His plays, including The Merchant of Venice, have been translated into every major language and are the most performed of any playwright. The Merchant of Venice is classified as one of Shakespeare's early comedies, written between 1596-1598. It follows the story of Antonio, a merchant in Venice, and his friend Bassanio who borrows money from him.
