Concept - Mentorship / Mentoring
• It's a (beneficial )relationship between:
– a more experienced person
– and a less experienced individual(s).
• For the purpose of
– professional (career growth, leadership skills,
communication skills, expanding viewpoint, and
new ways of approaching situations)
– personal development (attitudinal changes like
belief in oneself, emotional ,time, stress and
resilience aspects).

What is A Mentor?
• An experienced individual who shares knowledge,
experience, and advice with a less experienced
person.
• A trusted adviser and a role model who has "been
there" and "done that."
• Supports and encourages by offering suggestions,
advice, counselling and knowledge, both general and
specific.
• helps others learn, grow, and improve their skills.
• Examples
4/14/2024 5
What is a Mentee?
• A mentee is a person who receives advice,
training, or guidance from a more
experienced or skilled person / mentor.
• A mentee is one who needs to learn specific
skills or competencies from the mentor.
4/14/2024 6
Difference between a Mentor and a
Teacher
• A blurred line between the two ; might change from one into
another – styles
• Structured vs unstructured or semi structured information
• Formal vs informal relationship
• Paid vs unpaid service
• Teaching is about knowledge
• Mentoring is about experience
• Teaching focuses on the how, mentoring focuses on the how
and why - both
• The primary difference between a mentor and a teacher is
that the mentor offers personalised advice, while the teacher
delivers structured information to groups.
4/14/2024 7
Continued
• Teachers can be mentors and vice versa - both are
important and necessary.
• A teacher’s first priority is instruction—but they can
be creative and interactive in their approach……..
• They recognize and foster individuality, creativity and
become mentors in their own right.
• While a mentor’s priority is on personal
development, the mentee must possess “know-how”
skills. And so mentoring will always have an
instructional component.
• So as a student, do one need a teacher or a mentor?
The answer is…one needs both.
